The questioner : From Rahimah of the Eastern Region, she sent this message. H. J. Al-Shamri says: As for what follows, my problem is that my father divorced my mother, so my mother married another man and bore him children. She breastfed my maternal cousin along with one of the children. My question is: Does my maternal cousin become my brother because he suckled my mother along with one of my brothers from my mother only, not from my father? I now kiss him as if he were my brother because people say, "He is your brother because he suckled your mother." But my mother was with another man, not my father, on the day she was breastfeeding my maternal cousin?

The Shaykh : We say: Yes, if your maternal cousin suckled from your mother the amount of breastfeeding that is considered valid in the Shari'ah, which is five breastfeedings or more before weaning, then he becomes your brother, even if he suckled from your mother after she married another husband other than your father. This is because he would then be your brother through the mother, just as if your father's wife were to breastfeed a child, he would become your brother through the father, since he is a son of your father. Accordingly, whenever a person suckles from a person's mother, whether after her father or before him, this person who suckled becomes his brother through the mother. Then, if it was from her milk when she was the wife of his father, he becomes his brother through both the mother and the father.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes.

The questioner : From Muhammad...

The Shaykh : No, nothing remains on him.

The questioner : Yes.

The Shaykh : And her statement that he used to kiss her, or something similar, this is not permissible, even if she is one of his mahrams, especially if she does not sit with him often. This kissing may cause some effect. Therefore, he should greet her with a handshake and kiss her head, or it is permissible for him to kiss her head. As for kissing on the mouth and cheeks, this is not permissible. Yes.
