The Shaykh : And this is what appears to be the case: that the People of the Book calculated their time based on lunar months, as evidenced by the fact that the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) arrived in Madinah while they were fasting on Ashura, that is, the tenth day of Muharram. Then, His saying, the Exalted: [Al-Baqarah 2:189] To whom is this addressed? To people in general. And He said: [At-Tawbah 9:36] after that.
The student: In the Book of Allah.
The Shaykh :[At-Tawbah 9:36] But nations, over the long span of time, changed and altered things. A person told me and promised me that he would come to me tomorrow with what he told me, namely that the names of the European months were the names of gods; some were names of gods, some were names of kings, and some were occasions for them. That is to say, they are not based on tangible science, nor on reason, nor on transmitted reports.
They ask you, [O Muhammad], about the new moons. Say, "They are measurements of time
يَسْأَلُونَكَ عَنِ الْأَهِلَّةِ قُلْ هِيَ مَوَاقِيتُIndeed, the number of months with Allah is twelve [lunar] months
إِنَّ عِدَّةَ الشُّهُورِ عِنْدَ اللهِ اثْنَا عَشَرَ شَهْرًاThe student: In the Book of Allah.
