Commentary on Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim-07a

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: "Also, what Abu Dawud narrated: Qutaybah ibn Sa'id al-Thaqafi narrated to us, Muhammad ibn Rabi'ah narrated to us, Abu al-Hasan al-Asqalani narrated to us from Abu Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Rakanah, or Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Rakanah from his father".

The Shaykh : No, or Muhammad ibn Rakanah, Muhammad ibn Ali, the first context.
The reader: I have Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Yazid ibn Rakanah, a truthful narrator from the sixth generation.

The Shaykh : No, no, look, the Shaykh's book says: from Abu Ja'far.
The reader: That is, from Abu Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Rakanah, or Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Rakanah from his father.

The Shaykh : Yes, it is a repetition, delete "Ali" after "or," or Muhammad ibn Rakanah.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : How?
The reader: Here it says: Abu Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Ali, the first context added Abu Ja'far.

The Shaykh : Wait, let us leave Abu Ja'far aside, from Abu Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Rakanah, or Muhammad ibn Rakanah.
The reader: Muhammad ibn Ali.

The Shaykh : No, it is a mistake, Ibn Ali.
The student: We do not have the addition.

The Shaykh : Which one?
The student: I have from Abu Ja'far ibn Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Rakanah from his father that he was.

The Shaykh : No, we do not have it.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : The important thing is to cross out Muhammad ibn Ali, cross out Ibn Ali, this is a repetition, there is no... because Abu Ja'far narrated from Muhammad, so from which Muhammad? Is it Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Rakanah or Muhammad ibn Rakanah? But this is it, so if you say from Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Rakanah, or Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Rakanah.
The student: The second is from Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Yazid.

The Shaykh : That is how it is with you, no, it is not Ibn Yazid with us.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : The important thing, my brothers, is the variation in manuscripts. I am speaking with a man whose manuscript is like mine, except that it has Ibn Ali repeated twice. I hope you will pay attention, have a little etiquette now. I am addressing a man who says Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Rakanah, then he says: or Muhammad ibn Ali ibn Rakanah, is that how it is or not with you?
The student: It is permissible.

The Shaykh : Okay, the second one, the first one, we must delete Ali, because what I have is "or Muhammad ibn Rakanah," the matter is finished. As for the variation in manuscripts, Muhammad ibn Yazid, or this is a second thing, yes.
The reader: "or Muhammad ibn Rakanah from his father
That Rakanah wrestled with the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) threw him to the ground. Rakanah said: And I heard the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) say: The headwraps over the skullcaps distinguish us from the polytheists.
.
This implies that it is hasan (good) in the view of Abu Dawud, and al-Tirmidhi also narrated it from Qutaybah and said: It is strange (gharib), its chain is not strong, we do not know Abu al-Hasan, nor do we know Ibn Rakanah.
This degree of criticism does not prevent one from being supported by this hadith and citing it as evidence, and this is clear in that it is required by the Lawgiver for the Muslim to differ from the polytheist in clothing"
.

The Shaykh : But in the issue of clothing, if the situation were reversed, such that the polytheists in the time of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) wore a specific clothing and the Muslims wore a specific clothing, and then the situation reversed, so that the clothing of the Muslims in the time of the Messenger became the clothing of the polytheists today, and the clothing of the Muslims today is the clothing of the polytheists of the past, we say: Praise be to Allah, the difference has become apparent, and there is no harm in the Muslims remaining with the current clothing, which was the clothing of the polytheists in the past, unless the clothing is forbidden in itself. In that case, it is not permissible to wear it in any case. And therefore, it has passed us previously that Ahmad (may Allah have mercy on him) disliked the clothing of certain things, saying: The Shaykh al-Islam said: They were the emblem of the oppressors in his time, such as black and the like. Yes.
