The reader: "As for the obligation of the principle of differentiation: I have not found any scholarly disagreement on this.
And Abu al-Shaykh al-Isfahani narrated in the conditions of the People of the Book, with his chain of narration, that 'Umar ibn al-Khattab wrote:
Do not correspond with the People of the Book, so that affection does not develop between you and them. Do not use honorifics for them. Humiliate them, but do not wrong them. Order the women of the People of the Book to tie their sashes and let down their forelocks
"

The Shaykh : their forelocks
The reader: "
and let down their forelocks and raise their garments from their calves, so that their attire is distinguished from that of Muslim women. If they prefer otherwise, let them enter Islam willingly or by force
"
.

The Shaykh : (may Allah be pleased with him). But what 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him) mentioned, if we were to say that women disbelievers should raise their garments from their calves, that would cause fitnah (trial, discord or temptation) in the present time. The time is not compatible with this distinction mentioned by 'Umar (may Allah be pleased with him). However, it appears to us that the distinction is achieved. Yes, it appears that it is achieved; women disbelievers wear clothes from which the calves are visible.
The student: Rather, the Muslim women.

The Shaykh : I do not say disbelievers; I say women disbelievers wear clothes from which the calf is visible, is that not so?
The student: Muslim women now wear what reveals the calf.

The Shaykh : No, no, no, no. I do not agree with this.
The student: We have a version that says "do not tie."

The Shaykh : Yes
The student: We have a version
Order the women of the People of the Book not to tie their sashes
that says "do not tie."

The Shaykh : By Allah, there is a difference. What do you have? Do you have the manuscript, Samih?
Order the women of the People of the Book to tie their sashes
.
The student: "To tie."

The Shaykh : Okay, it is possible to return to the original. Return to the original, here.
The student: In the printed version, it says "do not tie."

The Shaykh : It is two versions now. We want the original, because this is quoted from Abu al-Shaykh. Who has it? Who does not have a check? Do you have a check, Mas'ud? There is a check. Yes.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : This must be in al-Mughni, it must be in Sharh al-Muhadhdhab, it must be... 'Abdullah, may Allah reward you with good. Okay, 'Abdullah took it. Hajjaj, yes.
His statement (may Allah be pleased with him):
Humiliate them and do not use honorifics for them
is taken from the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) that he forbade us to initiate the greeting to the Jews and Christians, and if we meet them on a road, we should force them to the narrowest part of it. This is undoubtedly humiliation for them, but without injustice. Yes, okay.
The student: Some people part the hair; the forelock of the head is...

The Shaykh : So, Abu al-Shaykh also narrated. We stop here. Yes.
