The bridal gift is the mahr. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) clarified in this hadith that the best of it is the easiest, meaning the simplest and lightest. This is because it facilitates marriage. If mahr or bridal gifts are light, marriage becomes more common. Also, the blessing of a light mahr is that it is a cause for good conduct between the spouses. If a man gives his wife a large mahr, every time he remembers this mahr, his mood is disturbed, his self-esteem is hurt, and he treats the woman badly. If he knows that this woman came easily, his soul is pleased and he is at peace with her.
And the blessing of an easy bridal gift is that it becomes a cause for resolving disputes without hardship. If a dispute occurs between a man and his wife and the mahr is light, it is easy for him to divorce her and part with her. It is also easy for her family to agree to khul' if she requests it with the mahr he gave.
But if the mahr is large, let us suppose the mahr is forty thousand, which is a lot, then every time he intends to divorce her and relieve her from the darkness of the marriage, he remembers the large mahr and holds onto her.
Then, if it happens that he wants khul' and asks her family to give him the mahr, they may be stingy with it. Therefore, this hadith is true:.
Also, there is a social benefit in it, which is that people turn to marriage if mahr is easy. For this reason, we find now that people are in a bad state regarding the bridal gift and its amount. You find a person going to distant lands in order to obtain a wife, and then problems arise that have no end.
