Zakat on a Woman’s Bridal Gift

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Fatwa No. ( 18223 )
Q: Two brothers, who are my sisters' suitors, proposed to them two years ago and paid us half the mahr, which was forty thousand riyals. My question is: If a lunar year passes over this mahr, do we have to pay zakah on it or not? And do we pay the zakah from the mahr itself or from other money? We have already paid zakah on it from the mahr itself in the year that has passed.
Please inform us, may Allah reward you with good.

A: Zakat is obligatory on a woman’s bridal gift if it remains in her possession and a lunar year passes over it from the time of the marriage contract, by paying one-quarter of one-tenth of it. However, if the amount mentioned was paid after the mere proposal and no marriage contract was concluded between them, then the zakat is obligatory on the one who paid it, because it is his property and has not entered the woman’s possession. And success is from Allah, and may Allah send prayers and blessings upon our Prophet Muhammad, his family, and his Companions.
