Is the trial always a punishment, or not?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The student: ......

The Shaykh : It may be a punishment, or it may be a trial and a test, as Allah the Exalted said:
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,
[al-Baqarah:155]. So it becomes a test, and it may be a punishment, as Allah the Exalted said:
And whatever strikes you of disaster - it is for what your hands have earned
[Ash-Shuraa 42:30]
. So a person may be tested as a punishment for a sin, or as a test. The calamities that befall the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) are of the nature of a test, so that a person reaches the degree of perfection, because patience, as you know, holds a high and great station in the religion.
Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account."
[Az-Zumar 39:10]
But patience without something to be patient about is not possible; it is necessary that things come upon a person from the divine decree of Allah, and he be patient over them.
The student: .....

The Shaykh : This is included in that. The trial, as regards good, is a trial of gratitude, and as regards evil, it is a trial of patience.
The student: Shaykh! He the Exalted says:
Indeed, prayer prohibits immorality and wrongdoing... The Shaykh: No, no, it is not possible. I think we discussed this before... Any remaining benefits?
