Continuation of the explanation of the statement of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then the author (may Allah have mercy on him) cited the verses containing the exhortation to patience and the praise of its doer, saying: "And the saying of Allah the Exalted:
O you who have believed, persevere and endure and remain stationed
[Ali 'Imran 3:200]
"
: So Allah commanded the believers, in accordance with their faith and the nobility of their faith, with these three commands, or rather four:
persevere and endure and remain stationed and fear Allah that you may be successful.
[Ali 'Imran 3:200]
: So patience is regarding sin, perseverance is regarding obedience, steadfastness is the abundance of good and the continuity of good, and taqwa encompasses all of that.
And fear Allah that you may succeed.
[Al-Baqarah 2:189]
: So be patient regarding the prohibitions of Allah, do not commit them, avoid them, and do not approach them. And it is known that patience regarding sin only exists where the soul calls for it. As for a person to whom sin does not occur to his mind, it is not said that he was patient regarding it. But when your soul calls you to sin, be patient and restrain the soul.
As for perseverance, it is regarding obedience, because obedience involves two things: the first is an act that a person exerts effort in and obligates himself to, and the second is that it is heavy upon the soul, because performing obedience, like leaving off sin, is heavy upon souls that command evil. For this reason, patience regarding obedience is better than patience regarding sin. For this reason, Allah the Exalted said:
Persevere
: As if someone is persevering with you as a person perseveres with his enemy in fighting and jihad.
As for steadfastness: it is the abundance of good and the continuity of it. For this reason, it came in the hadith from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that he said:
Doing Wudu' properly [1] even when it is inconvenient, taking a lot of steps to the Masjid, and waiting for one Salah after another. That is the Ribat for you, that is the Ribat for you
Sunan an-Nasa'i 143Sahih (Darussalam)
: Because it contains continuity in obedience and abundance in its performance.
As for taqwa: it encompasses all of that, because taqwa is: "taking what protects from the punishment of Allah, and this is done by performing the commands and avoiding the prohibitions". And on this basis, its conjunction to what preceded is from the category of conjoining the general to the specific. Then Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) explained that performing these four commands is a cause of success, and He said:
Perhaps you will succeed
: And success is a comprehensive term revolving around two things: the attainment of what is desired and safety from what is feared. So whoever fears Allah (Mighty and Majestic) attains his desire and is saved from his fear.
As for the second verse, he (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "And His saying, the Exalted:
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,
[Al-Baqarah 2:155]
"
: This verse contains an oath from Allah (Mighty and Majestic) that He will test the servants with these matters
And We will surely test you ولنبلونكم
meaning: We will surely test you,
with something of fear
[Al-Baqarah 2:155]
: It is not with everything, but with something of it, not with all of fear, because all of fear is destructive and devastating, but with something of it from fear and hunger.
Fear: it is the loss of security, and it is greater than hunger. For this reason, Allah placed it before it, because a hungry person might make excuses and go seeking, even if it is the bark of a tree. But the fearful one, may Allah protect us, does not settle, neither in his house nor in the market. The fearful one is greater than the hungry one. For this reason, Allah began with it and said:
with something of fear
[Al-Baqarah 2:155]
. And the most frightening thing we fear is our sins, because sins are the cause of all calamities, and the cause of dangers, fears, and religious punishments, and worldly punishments. And hunger: it means being afflicted with hunger. Hunger carries two meanings: the first meaning is that Allah the Exalted causes a plague among the servants, which is the plague of hunger, such that a person eats and does not become full. And this passes through people. And a year known to the common people, called the Year of Hunger, passed through these lands. A person eats a lot of food but does not become full, may Allah protect us, always. We are told that a person eats a full measure of dates at one time and does not become full, may Allah protect us, and eats a lot of bread and does not become full due to an illness in him. This is a type of hunger. The second type of hunger: drought, and the barren years in which no udder yields milk and no crop grows, may Allah protect us. This is from hunger.
a loss of wealth and lives
[Al-Baqarah 2:155]
: The loss of wealth means: the loss of the economy, such that the community is afflicted with a scarcity of material and poverty, and its economy is delayed and its government is burdened with debts that come as a result of causes that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) decrees as a trial and test. And lives: death, such that plagues strike the people, destroying them and ending them. And this also happens frequently. And we were told that it happened in these lands—meaning the Najdi lands—that a great plague occurred, and its year is called by the common people: the Year of Mercy. When the plague entered a house, it left no one in it but buried, may Allah protect us. It enters a house with ten people or more, and this one is afflicted with an illness, and from the next morning the second and the third and the fourth until they all die. And we were told that it was brought to this mosque, the great congregational mosque in Unaizah, and the people were originally in a small village without the abundance of scholars as there is today. Sometimes in one obligatory prayer, seven or eight funerals were brought, we seek refuge in Allah, from plagues. This is also a loss of lives.
And fruits: that there is no hunger, but the fruits are diminished, their blessing is removed from the crops, the palm trees, and the other trees. And Allah (Mighty and Majestic) tests the servants with these matters:
so He may let them taste part of [the consequence of] what they have done that perhaps they will return [to righteousness].
[Ar-Rum 30:41]
. And people respond to these calamities with various degrees: with dissatisfaction, with patience, with contentment, with gratitude, as we said previously. And the rest of the speech on the verse will come, if Allah wills.
The reader: And may prayers and peace be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
He (may Allah have mercy on him) said: "The chapter of patience. Allah the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, persevere and
[Ali 'Imran 3:200]
, and He said:
And We will surely test you with something of fear and hunger and a loss of wealth and lives and fruits, but give good tidings to the patient,
[Al-Baqarah 2:155]
, and He said:
Indeed, the patient will be given their reward without account." إنما يُوفى الصابرون أجرهم بغير حساب
[Az-Zumar 39:10]
, and He said:
And whoever is patient and forgives - indeed, that is of the matters [requiring] determination.
[Ash-Shuraa 42:43]
"
