The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And [remember] when you said to the one upon whom Allah had bestowed favor and you had bestowed favor, ‘Hold onto your wife for yourself’”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then Allah the Exalted said:
And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor وَإِذْ تَقُولُ لِلَّذِي أَنْعَمَ اللَّهُ عَلَيْهِ
[Al-Ahzab 33:37]
to the end of it. It is derived from this noble verse the reminding of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) of the matters in which it is good to admonish, due to His saying:
And [remember] when you said وَإِذْ تَقُولُ
where we stated that it is in the accusative case by a deleted verb, the estimation of which is “remember.”
Among its benefits is: clarifying the favor of Allah upon Zayd ibn Harithah through Islam and his holding fast to it, to the extent that when his father and his uncles came seeking him, and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) gave them the choice between him and the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), he chose to be with the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him).
Among its benefits also is: that manumission is a favor from the one who frees upon the one who is freed, and it is so, and the jurists express it by calling manumission a favor.
Among the benefits of the noble verse is: that it is permissible to connect non-Shari'ah matters with the conjunction “and” if the meaning differs, and we stated that the Messenger does not equate Allah with the Messenger with the conjunction “and” in non-Shari'ah matters. Here, the favor of the Messenger is connected to the favor of Allah with the conjunction “and,” although it is not from the Shari'ah matters, but what justified that was the difference between the two favors; the first favor is Islam and the second favor is manumission.
Among the benefits of the noble verse is: that the wife is subordinate to the husband, due to His saying:
Hold onto for yourself أمسك عليك
so it is as if he gathers her, guards her, and protects her, and she is subordinate to him, as in the saying of Allah the Exalted:
So eat of what they catch for you فَكُلُوا مِمَّا أَمْسَكْنَ عَلَيْكُمْ
[Al-Ma'idah: 4].
Among the benefits of the noble verse is: consulting those of opinion, because Zayd consulted the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him).
Among its benefits is: that it is obligatory upon the one who is consulted to exert what he sees, even if by his independent legal reasoning, what he sees is the best, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) advised Zayd to hold onto her by his independent legal reasoning, out of fear of stirring up the hypocrites and the disbelievers against him. It is clear, but we do not mean that the advisor is necessarily correct in what he does; he may err in what he does, but in the state of his advice, he sees that it is the correct thing.
Among the benefits of the noble verse is: that it is better for the husband not to hasten with divorce and to hold onto his wife, due to His saying:
And [remember, O Muhammad], when you said to the one on whom Allah bestowed favor and you bestowed favor, "Keep your wife and fear Allah," while you concealed within yourself that which Allah is to disclose. And you feared the people, while Allah has more right that you fear Him. So when Zayd had no longer any need for her, We married her to you in order that there not be upon the believers any discomfort concerning the wives of their adopted sons when they no longer have need of them. And ever is the command of Allah accomplished. أمسك عليك زوجك
[Al-Ahzab 33:37]
so he advised him not to divorce, and although the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) had other purposes, but it does not prevent that the reasons for the command to hold onto her are multiple. And it is known that Allah the Mighty and Majestic said in His clear Book:
For if you dislike them - perhaps you dislike a thing and Allah makes therein much good. فَإِنْ كَرِهْتُمُوهُنَّ فَعَسَى أَنْ تَكْرَهُوا شَيْئًا وَيَجْعَلَ اللَّهُ فِيهِ خَيْرًا كَثِيرًا
[An-Nisa: 19]
