The questioner : His other question is long, concerning the prostration for forgetfulness. He says in it: We will present it in summary, then return to it paragraph by paragraph. He asks: What is the prostration for forgetfulness, when is it obligatory, and how is it performed? Is it before the closing salam or after it? And how do I act if I do not know whether I prostrated two prostrations or one, or performed two rak'ahs or one, or recited al-Fatihah or not, or recited the tashahhud? His question, or the first paragraph of this question, asks: What is the prostration for forgetfulness?

The Shaykh : The prostration for forgetfulness is two prostrations that a person performs, either to spite the Shaytan if it becomes clear that the reason for which he prostrated did not exist, or to complete his prayer, as that came from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), where he said (peace and blessings be upon him):
If he prayed to complete it, they are to spite the Shaytan; and if he prayed five, they make his prayer even. إن كان صلى إتماماً كانتا ترغيماً للشيطان، وإن كان صلى خمساً شفعن صلاته
So this is the basis for the prostration for forgetfulness: that they are two prostrations which a person performs, either to spite the Shaytan, or to complete and perfect his prayer. Yes.
