Allah the Mighty and Majestic said: “thereby namely the disbelievers from the people of Makkah when they said that fire burns the trees, so how can it make them grow” The tree of Zaqqum, which Allah the Exalted made a trial for the wrongdoers, meaning a test by which they are tested, and a trial meaning a cause of misguidance, for the term trial is used for a test and is used for that which is a cause of misguidance. [Al-Buruj 85:10] meaning they were a cause of their misguidance. And Allah the Mighty and Majestic says: [Ad-Dukhan 44:17] meaning We tested them, or if you wish, say We misled them, for Allah tested the family of Pharaoh, but they were misguided, refuge with Allah, so Allah misled them. A trial for the wrongdoers means a test for them and a cause of their misguidance. A test for them, for if they had believed, they would have accepted it and not objected. And a cause of their misguidance, for it made them take this as a refutation of what the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) reported, saying, “This Muhammad claims that trees grow in the fire, while the custom is that fire burns trees, so how can they grow in the fire?” And it is known that the answer to this is easy for us. We say that Allah is capable of all things, and it is a fiery tree whose nature is compatible with fire and does not contradict it. Allah the Mighty and Majestic said: [As-Saffat 37:63] The meaning of the wrongdoers here is the disbelievers, and there is no doubt that disbelief is injustice. Allah the Exalted said: [Luqman 31:13] And it is also known that injustice varies; it has great, varying degrees, some of which reach disbelief, some of which reach open sinfulness, and some of which are less than that. He said: [As-Saffat 37:64-65] and so on.
