Exegesis of the verse: (( It has been made attractive to people the love of desires, namely women, sons, and loaded camels of gold and silver... ))

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then Allah (Mighty and Majestic) said:
Beautified for people is the love of that which they desire - of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land
[Ali 'Imran 3:14]
How many are these?
of women and sons, heaped-up sums of gold and silver, fine branded horses, and cattle and tilled land
[Ali 'Imran 3:14]
Seven, unless you wish to count gold and silver as one, making gold and silver two. Well,
It has been made attractive to people زين للناس
means He made this thing attractive in their hearts. And who made it attractive? Is the one who made it attractive Allah (Mighty and Majestic), or is it Shaytan? The one who made it attractive is Allah, the one who made it attractive is Allah. And Allah attributed the making attractive to Himself in several verses:
Thus We have made attractive to every nation what they know
Indeed, for those who do not believe in the Hereafter, We have made pleasing to them their deeds
[An-Naml 27:4]
, and He also attributed the making attractive to Shaytan:
and Satan has made their deeds pleasing to them and averted them from [His] way
[An-Naml 27:24]
But Shaytan’s making attractive was only with regard to the deeds of these people, meaning He made their deeds attractive to them. As for the created things, the One who makes them attractive is Allah (Mighty and Majestic).
It was made attractive to people زين للناس
means Allah (Mighty and Majestic) made them attractive in their hearts as a trial and a test. Because if these things were not made attractive in the hearts of people, the true believer would not be known. If a person did not care about such matters, he would have nothing to deter him from the religion of Allah. So when the love of these desires is cast into his heart, if his faith is strong, he does not prefer them over the love of Allah (Mighty and Majestic). Have you not seen the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
a man whom a beautiful woman of high rank seduces (for illicit relation), but he (rejects this offer by saying):" I fear Allah" رجل دعته امرأة ذات منصب وجمال فقال: إني أخاف الله
Sahih Muslim 1031a
This is one of those whom Allah will shade in His Shade on the Day when there is no shade except His. The woman who has status and beauty is among the strongest things that a man attaches to among women, status and beauty, and yet he said: “Indeed, I fear Allah.” And he called her to a place where no one was present, because if there had been someone there, he would have said: “We have someone here, how can you say such a thing?” But he said: “Indeed, I fear Allah.” The empty place is like the barriers being absent, and the causes of fornication are present and widespread, and yet he said: “Indeed, I fear Allah.” So we say that this making attractive is a trial and a test from Allah (Mighty and Majestic). He said:
the love of that which they desire - of women
[Ali 'Imran 3:14]
For this reason, does this include the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)? Is it said that he is among those for whom the love of desires was made attractive? No, because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not marry a virgin. If he had wanted desire, he would have chosen beautiful virgins, and nothing would have prevented him from doing so. But he said:
I have made attractive to you of this world women and perfume
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 10:849
due to the great benefits in his (peace and blessings be upon him) choice of women, such as his connection with people and the Arab tribes, and also the spreading of knowledge through women, especially domestic sciences that only women are aware of, and other such benefits. The important point is that the verse says:
the love of that which they desire - of women
[Ali 'Imran 3:14]
and He did not say: “the love of women,” because if the making attractive of the love of women is for something other than mere desire, a person may be praised for it. But if it is for mere desire, this is from fitnah (trial, discord or temptation). For this reason He said:
the love of that which they desire - of women
[Ali 'Imran 3:14]
. Second:
sons البنين
They also love sons, not to be a helper for him in obedience to Allah, but to boast with them. And in the pre-Islamic age of ignorance, they used to boast with sons and consider daughters a bad omen. When one of them was informed of the birth of a female, what was his state?
(58) And when one of them is informed of [the birth of] a female, his face becomes dark, and he suppresses grief. (59) He hides himself from the people because of the ill of which he has been informed. Should he keep it in humiliation or bury it in the ground? Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.
[An-Nahl 16:58-59]
He would hide from people for fear of being insulted, then he would think and consider:
Should he keep it in humiliation or bury it in the ground?
[An-Nahl 16:59]
meaning, does he keep this newborn, who is a female, in humiliation and degradation of her rights, or does he bury her alive in the earth? Allah the Exalted said:
Unquestionably, evil is what they decide.
[An-Nahl 16:59]
The important point is that there is no doubt that for many people, the love of sons was made attractive as a desire, not a sexual desire, but a desire for boasting, honor, and grandeur: “I have ten children,” “I have twenty children,” and the like.
heaped-up sums of gold and silver
[Ali 'Imran 3:14]
Al-Qanatir is the plural of qintar. And what is meant by qintar? It was said that it means a thousand mithqals of gold, so if they become qanatir, they become thousands. Muqanatar means cared for. And it was said that the qintar is what fills the hide of an ox, meaning the hide of an ox of gold, and this is more than a thousand mithqals? Yes, in any case, Allah the Exalted mentioned these amounts of gold and silver because, as a rule, the more wealth there is, the more a person is tempted by it. The more there is, the more a person is tempted by it. So if there are loaded camels of gold, the temptation with them is more severe.
[Ali 'Imran 3:14]
He specified them because they are the most valuable of wealth. And therefore, desires attach to these two precious metals: gold and silver. Even if precious gems are found, you will not find the attachment of hearts to these gems like their attachment to gold and silver. Now they deceive regarding gold and they deceive regarding silver. They bring things coated in yellow color, what? Imitating gold, or is it not gold? Because they know that souls are driven strongly toward gold and have a strong desire for gold. And the poet says:
I saw that people have gone to the one who has gold
And I saw that people have inclined to the one who has wealth
He says:
[Ali 'Imran 3:14]
Gold is the known metal with the yellow color. Recently, what is called white gold has become famous among people, but this is not the gold, even though they consider it to be in the position of gold in terms of value and the attachment of souls to it, but it is not the gold meant in this verse. And silver is also a known metal and a familiar substance, but it is less than gold.

The questioner : Shaykh! Did the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) not marry a virgin?

The Shaykh : No, he did not marry a virgin. Generally, no one except Aisha. He married Aisha and she was a virgin.
