Continuation of the discussion on patience: its types and examples of the patience of the prophets and the righteous.

He was writing while he was in prison, spreading knowledge in the prison. So they prevented him from having an inkwell and paper, and he began writing knowledge on the prison walls, writing what Allah opened up to him. He mentioned about himself that Allah opened up to him great knowledge because he turned exclusively to Allah (Mighty and Majestic). His companions would come to him and take what he had written. What did his enemies do? They prevented his companions from coming to him, saying, "Do not come to this man to take his knowledge." And despite that, he was patient and devoted himself to reciting the Qur'an. His brother was with him, reviewing the Qur'an with him, until he completed the recitation of the words of Allah the Exalted: [Al-Qamar 54:54-55] Then his soul overflowed (may Allah have mercy on him) — Allah is the Greatest — a conclusion, a good conclusion. We ask Allah to join us, you, and him with the righteous. The important point is that patience is a high rank. And you, by what Allah has granted you of knowledge — and praise be to Allah — and by which He has favored you over many of His believing servants, it is obligatory upon you to disseminate the knowledge and to be patient regarding the harm in it. Therefore, we say: Patience is of three types: patience in obedience to Allah, patience from the prohibitions of Allah, and patience regarding the painful decrees of Allah. Which of the types is best? The best is patience in obedience to Allah, then patience from disobedience to Allah, then patience regarding the decrees of Allah. This is in terms of the principle. But a person may suffer more from patience regarding decrees than from patience regarding commands, so he is rewarded from this aspect in terms of the hardship. And he may suffer more from patience from the prohibitions of Allah than from patience in obedience to Allah, so from this aspect he has more reward due to the hardship. Did you understand? But in terms of the categories themselves, in terms of the categories themselves, the best is undoubtedly patience in obedience to Allah. Because patience in obedience to Allah combines two things: compelling the inner self to this action and compelling the outer body to this action. Because obedience is an action, and action requires first a resolve and second an act. So it contains two matters. But patience from sin contains only an inner action, which is restraining the self from the act. There is no physical exertion in it: no bowing, no prostration, no standing, no sitting, no spending of wealth, or anything else. It is only restraint. So it contains only inner suffering. For this reason, it became a lower rank. Patience regarding decrees contains neither this nor that, because it is not by his choice. A person is struck by an accident and his leg or hand is broken. Is it by his choice? This is not by his choice. So either he is patient with the patience of the noble, or he is distracted with the distraction of beasts. There is nothing in it. For this reason, it became a lower rank than the first two categories, because the first two categories are from the action and choice of the person.
