A discussion on the meanings of the verse: “O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul…”

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
I seek refuge in Allah from Satan, the accursed.

The Shaykh : Allah the Exalted said:
O mankind, fear your Lord
[An-Nisa 4:1]
First, is this surah Meccan or Medinan?
The student: Meccan.

The Shaykh : With
, yes, Yahya?
The student: Medinan.

The Shaykh : What is the difference between Meccan and Medinan? This is the correct view; this opinion is the correct one.

The Shaykh : His saying, the Exalted:
O mankind, fear your Lord, who created you from one soul
[An-Nisa 4:1]
who created you الذي خلقكم
This is a description called a description of what?
The student: A revealing description.

The Shaykh : And what is the meaning of a revealing description?
The student: It clarifies something regarding lordship, that He created them.
The Shaykh : What is meant by the one soul?
The student: Either the species is meant, or the individual.

The Shaykh : If we say the species, the meaning is from one species; if we say the individual, Adam is meant, and this is the correct view.

The Shaykh : His saying:
and dispersed from both of them many men
[An-Nisa 4:1]
What is the meaning of
And He spread from them بث منهما
?

The Shaykh :
many men and women
[An-Nisa 4:1]
He did not say “many women”; is this a case of sufficiency? Like His saying:
and has made for you garments which protect you from the heat
[An-Nahl 16:81]
meaning and the cold? Or is this a hint at something?

The Shaykh : His saying:
through whom you ask one another, and the wombs
[An-Nisa 4:1]
Are there two recitations?
The student: Yes,
You ask one another تساءلون
and
You ask one another تساءلون
.

The Shaykh : What is the root of
You ask one another تساءلون
?
The student: You ask one another.

The Shaykh : What is the meaning of asking by Allah? Does it mean intercession by Allah, making Allah an intercessor for you to this person?

The Shaykh : No, we do not want the ruling; what is the meaning of
You ask one another by Him تساءلون به
? Some of you ask others by Allah, like what?
The student: I ask you by Allah for such and such, or I invoke you by Allah, or something similar.

The Shaykh : What is the relationship between His saying:
And fear Allah, through whom you ask one another
[An-Nisa 4:1]
between the command to fear Allah and the fact that they ask by Him?
