The questioner : Regarding the hadith of 'Adi ibn Hatim in Muslim, in which when that preacher delivered the sermon before the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family), he said, "And whoever disobeys them has gone astray," and the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) said to him:
You are a bad preacher بئس الخطيب أنت
Rather, say:
And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger has gone astray ومن يعص الله ورسوله فقد غوى
Sunan al-Bayhaqi 1:366
Is there a contradiction with the saying of the Exalted:
And whoever disobeys Allah and His Messenger ومن يعص الله ورسوله ...
[An-Nisa 4:14]
And why did the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) rebuke this preacher?

The Shaykh : The best that has been said in answer to that is that the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) spoke ill of him because the occasion did not call for such wording. The occasion calls for explanation and elaboration, because if you address the people with such wording, they may think that there is no going astray unless the matter comes from Allah and His Messenger. So for every occasion there is a suitable speech. The Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) only spoke ill of him because he did not use the sermon in the appropriate context, not because this is prohibited, because the Messenger (may the prayer and peace of Allah be upon him) himself said it this way.
