The Exegesis of the Saying of Allah the Exalted: << وعد الله الذين ءامنوا وعملوا الصالحات لهم مغفرة و أجر عظيم >> .

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Then Allah the Exalted said:
Allah has promised those who believe and do righteous deeds [that] for them there is forgiveness and great reward. وعد الله الذين آمنوا وعملوا الصالحات لهم مغفرة وأجر عظيم
[Al-Ma'idah 5:9]
.
Allah has promised وعد
It is said: "wa'da" (promised), and it is said: "awa'da" (threatened). They said that "awa'da" is used for evil, and "wa'da" is used for good. And they based upon this the saying of the poet: "And I,
And if I threatened you or promised you, I would be one who breaks my threat and fulfills my promise.
What is the threat (iwa'd) for? Evil. And the promise (wa'd) is for good. Here it says:
And Allah has promised وعد الله
and it did not say: "awa'da" (threatened), because it is regarding those who believed and did righteous deeds. But this which some of the scholars of knowledge said may be disputed, because Allah the Exalted mentioned the promise (wa'd) in the context of punishment, saying:
Allah has promised the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the disbelievers the fire of Hell, wherein they will abide eternally وعد الله المنافقين والمنافقات والكفار نار جهنم خالدين فيها
[At-Tawbah 9:68]
And this is what indicates that the promise (wa'd) comes in the context of good and comes in the context of evil.
