for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًا [Al-Ahzab 33:35]
Repeat.
أعد
is a past tense verb, and the Divine Name is the subject. The sentence consisting of the verb and the subject is the predicate of
Indeed
إن
. What is the subject of
Indeed
إن
? It is “the Muslims” and what is conjoined to it. And his saying:
Allah has prepared for them
أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ [At-Tawbah 9:89]
means “for these.” The letter mīm is the marker of masculine plural. In it is a clear indication of the preference of men over women. Allah the Mighty and Majestic did not say, “Allah has prepared for them and for them [feminine],” nor did He say, “Allah has prepared for them [feminine],” but rather He said:
Allah has prepared for them
أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ [At-Tawbah 9:89]
. And his saying:
Repeat.
أعد
means “He prepared for them.” And his saying
forgiveness
مَغْفِرَةً
: “Maghfirah” (forgiveness) is derived from “ghufr,” which is covering with protection, because its origin is from the “mighfar” (helmet) placed on the head to ward off arrows. The “mighfar” placed on the head to ward off arrows provides covering, and what comes after that? Protection, like that. So, we say that “maghfirah” is the covering of sins and passing over them. It is not merely the covering of sins, but it is covering with passing over: covering from the creation and passing over the punishment. For this reason, it came in the authentic hadith:
Indeed, Allah forgives His believing servant, confirms him in his sins, and then says to him: “I have covered them for you in this world, and I am forgiving them for you today.”
إن الله يغفر لعبده المؤمن يقرره بذنوبه ثم يقول له قد سترتها عليك في الدنيا وأنا أغفرها لك اليوم
. And his saying:
a great reward
أجراً عظيماً
. So, by preparing forgiveness, they are saved from sins, their burdens, and their consequences. And
a great reward
أجراً عظيماً
means a reward that is great in itself. This great reward is entering Paradise, and it is a reward that humans cannot fully comprehend, because Allah the Exalted says in the Holy Hadith:
I have prepared for My righteous slaves (such excellent things) as no eye has ever seen, nor an ear has ever heard nor a human heart can ever think of.
أعددت لعبادي الصالحين مالا عين رأت ولا أذن سمعت ولا خطر على قلب بشر Sahih al-Bukhari 7498. And in the Qur'an, Allah the Exalted says:
And no soul knows what has been hidden for them of comfort for eyes
فَلا تَعْلَمُ نَفْسٌ مَا أُخْفِيَ لَهُمْ مِنْ قُرَّةِ أَعْيُنٍ
[Surat al-Sajdah: 17]. And He the Exalted says:
They will have whatever they wish therein, and with Us is more.
لَهُمْ مَا يَشَاءُونَ فِيهَا وَلَدَيْنَا مَزِيدٌ
[Surat Qaf: 35]. This great reward, whose measure only Allah the Mighty and Majestic can determine, is for those who possess these attributes. If Allah the Exalted has clarified these attributes, or clarified those who possess these attributes, and clarified what He has prepared for them of reward and recompense, is the intent merely to inform people of this, or is the intent something beyond that? The intent is something beyond that, which is that people should act upon these great attributes so that they may attain that great reward and forgiveness. And his saying:
for them Allah has prepared forgiveness and a great reward.
أَعَدَّ اللَّهُ لَهُمْ مَغْفِرَةً وَأَجْرًا عَظِيمًا [Al-Ahzab 33:35]
. The word
forgiveness
مغفرة
is indefinite. Do we say that it is indefinite for the sake of magnification, as evidenced by the conjunction with
and a great reward
وأجراً عظيماً
, or what? It appears that it is indefinite for the sake of magnification, meaning a great forgiveness, just as they have a great reward. The author says:
“Forgiveness for sins and a great reward for acts of obedience”. Good, this is because the author (may Allah have mercy on him) placed forgiveness in contrast to sins and the reward in contrast to acts of obedience.
