Allah the Exalted said: << قل سيروا في الأرض فانظروا كيف بدأ الله الخلق ثم الله ينشئ النشأة الأخرة إن الله على كل شيئ قدير >

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Say, [O Muhammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation قُلْ سِيرُوا فِي الأَرْضِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ بَدَأَ الْخَلْقَ
[Surah al-'Ankabut: 20] This verse, along with the one before it, may present an apparent difficulty, because the first verse,
Have they not seen? أولم يروا
, confirms that they see how Allah brings creation into being and then returns it, whereas here it says:
Say, [O Muhammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation قُلْ سِيرُوا فِي الأَرْضِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ بَدَأَ الْخَلْقَ
[Al-'Ankabut 29:20]
, which implies that up to now they have not known how Allah began creation. We say: the answer to this is that although they see how Allah began creation, they may deny it. So Allah the Exalted commanded His Prophet to command them to travel through the earth:
Say, [O Muhammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation قُلْ سِيرُوا فِي الأَرْضِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ بَدَأَ الْخَلْقَ
[Al-'Ankabut 29:20]
"Travel through the earth and see how the beasts give birth, look at the insects, look at the creations of Allah, Glorified and Exalted is He, how these things come into being? Without us seeing a creator for them other than Allah, Mighty and Majestic." Yes, this is a matter of compelling them, especially if we say that the first seeing is scientific, a matter of compelling them with what they observe on earth after they have traveled in it. And regarding His saying:
Say, "Travel through the land قل سيروا في الأرض
[Al-An'am 6:11]
, is the intended meaning traveling with the body, or traveling with the heart, or both? It is both, because a person may travel with his body and look upon the creations of Allah, and he may travel with his heart by reading what has been written about the creations of Allah, is that not so? Perhaps you read a book about animals or others while you are in your place in your room, and you have looked into what is in the east and west of the earth, and the travel at that time is with the heart. So it encompasses both matters. And know also that traveling with the feet does not benefit if there is no travel with the heart and consideration. If a person roamed all over the earth while heedless, he would not benefit from that travel at all. Rather, there must be alertness and consideration. Yes.
The student: ...?

The Shaykh : It is not considered traveling on earth by knowledge, which is its proper place, the heart; both are valid. For if we look at traveling on earth in reality, which is more common, traveling by the heart or by the feet? Traveling by the heart is unquestionable. In fact, if traveling by the feet is not intended for the sake of taking a lesson, it is of no benefit. If it is intended for taking a lesson, it reverts to being traveling by the heart, except that traveling by the heart and by the feet have come together.
and observe how He began creation فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ بَدَأَ الْخَلْقَ
[Al-'Ankabut 29:20]
We have
See howانظُرُوا كيف
and the first
Have they not considered how أولم يروا كيف
[Al-'Ankabut 29:19]
, and it is well known that
Lookانظروا
and
lookيروا
are transitive verbs, so where is their object?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Where are the sons of Sibawayhi?
How the creation beganكيف بدأ الخلق
? And how does Allah begin creation? The verb before it requires an object. O brothers, it is suspended by the interrogative. When the interrogative comes, it suspends the verb; it is suspended by the interrogative. Yes, for example,
Have they not considered how Allah begins creation and then repeats it أولم يروا كيف يبدئ الله الخلق ثم يعيده
[Al-'Ankabut 29:19]
Say, [O Muhammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation قل سيروا في الأرض فانظروا كيف بدأ الخلق
[Al-'Ankabut 29:20]
, the word
howكيف
here is in the position of accusative as a state (hal), and it suspends the verb from operating. And this has passed us in Ibn Malik's Alfiyyah; in which chapter of the chapters of grammar?
The student: In the chapter of Zann (supposition).

The Shaykh : In the chapter of Zann and its sisters: "And adhere to suspension before the negation of ma and in", to the end of it. Yes,
Say, [O Muhammad], "Travel through the land and observe how He began creation قُلْ سِيرُوا فِي الأَرْضِ فَانْظُرُوا كَيْفَ بَدَأَ الْخَلْقَ
[Al-'Ankabut 29:20]
"for those who were before you and He caused them to die."
