Explanation of the words of Imam al-Nawawi (may Allah have mercy on him) regarding what he quoted: "

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) said, in the context of the noble verses indicating reflection, and the verses in Surat Saba have already been mentioned:
Say, "I only advise you of one [thing] - that you stand for Allah, [seeking truth] in pairs and individually, and then give thought."
[Saba 34:46]
Then the author (may Allah have mercy on him) mentioned the saying of Allah the Exalted:
(190) Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and the earth and the alternation of the night and the day are signs for those of understanding. (191) Who remember Allah while standing or sitting or [lying] on their sides and give thought to the creation of the heavens and the earth, [saying], "Our Lord, You did not create this aimlessly; exalted are You [above such a thing]; then protect us from the punishment of the Fire. إن في خلق السماوات والأرض واختلاف الليل والنهار لآيات لأولي الألباب الذين يذكرون الله قياما وقعودا وعلى جنوبهم
[Ali 'Imran 3:190-191]
to the end. This verse is the first of the ten verses that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) used to recite whenever he woke up from the night prayer. It is necessary for a person, when he wakes up from the night prayer, to recite from this verse to the end of the last ten verses of Surat Ali 'Imran.
His saying, the Exalted:
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth
[Al-Baqarah 2:164]
means in their creation, in terms of size, greatness, and majesty, and other things that Allah has deposited in them. In this creation, there are signs. In the stars, there are signs of the signs of Allah. In the sun, there are signs of the signs of Allah. In the moon, there are signs of the signs of Allah. In the trees, there are signs of the signs of Allah. In the seas, in the rivers, in everything Allah has created in the heavens and the earth, there are great signs indicating the perfection of His oneness (Exalted and Majestic is He), the perfection of His power, the perfection of His mercy, and the perfection of His wisdom. He said, Mighty and Majestic:
Indeed, in the creation of the heavens and earth
[Al-Baqarah 2:164]
He grouped the heavens and singled out the earth because the heavens are seven, as Allah mentioned in several verses:
It is Allah who has created seven heavens
[At-Talaq 65:12]
Say, "Who is Lord of the seven heavens and Lord of the Great Throne?"
[Al-Mu'minun 23:86]
As for the earth, Allah the Exalted did not mention it in the Qur'an except in the singular, because the intended meaning is the generic term encompassing all lands. And Allah hinted in Surat al-Talaq that the lands are seven, saying:
It is Allah who has created seven heavens and of the earth, the like of them
[At-Talaq 65:12]
They are like them in number, but not like them in creation and greatness. Rather, the heavens are much greater than the earth, but they are like the heavens in number.
And the Sunnah came explicitly regarding this, such as the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
He who wrongly took a span of land, Allah shall make him carry around his neck seven earths.
Sahih Muslim 1610a

in the creation of the heavens and earth, and the alternation of the night and the day
[Al-Baqarah 2:164]
The alternation of night and day is from multiple aspects.
First, from the aspect that the night is dark and the day is bright, as He said, the Exalted:
And We have made the night and day two signs, and We erased the sign of the night and made the sign of the day visible
[Al-Isra 17:12]

And among them is their difference in length and shortness. Sometimes the night is long, and sometimes the day is long, and sometimes they are equal, as He said, the Exalted:
causes the night to enter the day and causes the day to enter the night
[Al-Hajj 22:61]
One enters into the other at times, taking from it, and this enters into that at times, taking from it. This is part of the alternation of night and day.
Among the differences between night and day is their difference in heat and cold. Sometimes the weather is hot, and sometimes it is cold. This is part of the alternation of night and day.
Among their differences is also fertility and drought. Sometimes the world is in drought for a long time and years, and sometimes it is fertile with spring and prosperity. This is part of the alternation of night and day.
Among the differences between night and day is their difference in war and peace. Sometimes it is war, and sometimes it is peace, and sometimes it is honor, and sometimes it is humiliation, as Allah the Exalted said:
And these days [of varying conditions] We alternate among the people
[Ali 'Imran 3:140]
And whoever reflects on the alternation of night and day will find in them signs of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, that astonish the minds.
And His saying, the Exalted:
are signs for those of understanding.
[Ali 'Imran 3:190]
Signs means clear, evident markers of the oneness of Allah, the perfection of His power, His might, His knowledge, His wisdom, His mercy, and other of His signs. And His saying:
For those of understanding
means for the owners of intellects. So what are the intellects? Al-Abbab is the plural of lubb, which is the intellect. And "owners of intellects" means owners of minds. This is because the intellect is the core, and a person without intellect is a husk without a core. The essence of a person is the intellect, which is why it is called the lubb. As for a person without intellect, he is a husk.
But what is meant by intellect? Is the intellect meant to be intelligence? No, intelligence is one thing, and intellect is another. Perhaps one is intelligent and gifted in his intelligence, but he is insane in his actions. The truly intelligent one is the one whose intellect restrains him from bad conduct. This is the intellect, even if he is not intelligent. So if Allah bestows upon a person both intelligence and intellect, the blessing is complete for him. And a person may be intelligent and not intelligent in the sense of having sound judgment, or have sound judgment and not be intelligent. All the disbelievers, even if they are all intelligent, are not people of sound judgment.
Indeed, the worst of living creatures in the sight of Allah are the deaf and dumb who do not use reason.
[Al-Anfal 8:22]
Every person who acts in a bad manner is not a person of sound judgment. So the owners of intellects are the owners of minds who reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth, look at the signs, take lessons from them, and use them as evidence for the One to whom these signs belong. These are the owners of minds, the owners of intellects. So strive, my brother, to reflect on the creation of the heavens and the earth, and to contemplate the signs within them, and also in the days and nights, and how conditions change and how they turn from one state to another. All of this is in the hand of Allah, Mighty and Majestic, and all of this is among His signs. And Allah grants success.
The reciter: Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
The author (may Allah have mercy on him) quoted, in the context of mentioning the verses in the chapter of reflection: "And Allah the Exalted said:
(17) Then do they not look at the camels - how they are created? (18) And at the sky - how it is raised? (19) And at the mountains - how they are erected? (20) And at the earth - how it is spread out? (21) So remind, [O Muhammad]; you are only a reminder.
[Al-Ghashiyah 88:17-21]
And Allah the Exalted said:
So have they not traveled through the earth and observed
[Yusuf 12:109]
The verse and the verses in this chapter are numerous."
