The reader: In the name of Allah, the Most Gracious, the Most Merciful.
Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds. Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and blessings and peace upon the noblest of the prophets and messengers, our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions.
As for what follows: Shaykh al-Islam Ibn Taymiyyah (may Allah have mercy on him) said in *Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim* "It was narrated from him that Mihnā said: I asked Ahmad about a man who rents his house or his shop to the Majus, and he knows that they commit zina. He said: 'Ibn 'Unayn did not think it permissible to rent to Muslims, saying: It frightens them'"

The Shaykh : What does "did not think it permissible" mean?
The reader: "did not think it permissible to rent to Muslims"

The Shaykh : We have "Muslim" in the singular, yes, he pointed to it.
The reader: He did not point.

The Shaykh : If you make it a copy.
The reader: "He said: 'Ibn 'Unayn did not think it permissible to rent to the Muslim, saying: It frightens them in taking the profit. And he thought it permissible to rent to non-Muslims. Abu Bakr al-Khallal said: Everyone who has reported from Abu 'Abdillah regarding a man renting his house to a dhimmi, Abu 'Abdillah only answered based on the action of Ibn 'Unayn, and it was not transmitted from Abu 'Abdillah in this matter. And it was reported'"

The Shaykh : It is transmitted, and it was not transmitted.
The reader: In my copy, he pointed to a copy where it says "it is transmitted."

The Shaykh : Yes, but you said "statement" with the nominative case.
The reader: And it was not transmitted.

The Shaykh : But the word "statement."
The reader: Yes, and it was not established for Abu 'Abdillah in this matter a statement.

The Shaykh : The statement
The reader: Statement, what?

The Shaykh : If it were transmitted, it would be a statement.
The reader: It is established.

The Shaykh : It is established.
The reader: Yes.

The Shaykh : We have in our copy, I heard it says "it is transmitted," yes.
The reader: Then he pointed to a copy where I have "it is transmitted."

The Shaykh : Yes
The reader: "And it was reported from him that Ibrahim saw him impressed by the statement of Ibn 'Unayn. And those who narrated from Abu 'Abdillah regarding a Muslim selling his house to a dhimmi: that he disliked it with intense dislike. If there were an established statement from Abu 'Abdillah regarding residence, then residence and sale would be the same in my view. And the matter, in the apparent statement of Abu 'Abdillah, is that it is not sold to them; because they disbelieve in it, and they set up crosses, and other things. And the matter in my view is that it is not sold to them and not rented to them; because it is one meaning."

The Shaykh : But there is no doubt that renting is easier, because renting does not transfer the ownership of the property, whereas sale does transfer the ownership of the property. And because renting is for a known, defined period, whereas sale is perpetual. And because sale entails ownership of the property and its rights, unlike the tenant. In any case, safety from renting it out is the most complete and best. As for if they rent it to make it a church or a tavern for intoxicants, then there is no doubt that it is not permissible, because this is aiding them in sin and transgression. But if they rent it for residence and then place a bell in it or something similar, then the lease is valid, but it is not recommended. And similarly in our present time, a Muslim rents a house to make it a place for what is broadcast on these satellite dishes, then renting it out is not valid. And if he rents it for residence and then places the residence there, the lease is valid. Yes.
