Reading from the author's words, with commentary on them and collation of the manuscripts: "And it is known that the categories are three: matters that Allah has decreed,

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: May Allah have mercy on him, in *Iqtida' al-Sirat al-Mustaqim*:
"And it is known that the categories are three: matters that Allah has decreed, which He does not love and does not approve of, so the means that bring about these are forbidden and warrant His punishment.
And matters He has legislated, which He loves from the servant and approves of, but He has not aided him in attaining them; these are praiseworthy and pleasing to Him, even if they do not occur.
And the third category is that Allah aids the servant in what He loves from him.
The first is Allah's help. The second is worshipping Allah. The third is that He combines worship and help for him. As He the Exalted said:
It is You we worship and You we ask for help.
[Al-Fatihah 1:5]
. So any supplication that is not permissible has an effect

The Shaykh : If it has an effect, it is permissible.
The reader: "So whatever of supplication is not permissible, if it has an effect, it is of the category of aid, not worship, like the other disbelievers, hypocrites, and open sinners. For this reason, He the Exalted said regarding Maryam:
and she believed in the words of her Lord and His scriptures
[At-Tahrim 66:12]
And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sought refuge with the perfect words of Allah, which no righteous person or sinner can surpass
.
And from the mercy of Allah the Exalted is that supplication containing shirk (associating partners with Allah), such as calling upon other than Him to do something, or calling upon Him to call upon [others], or the like, does not achieve the purpose of its owner, nor does it lead to the achievement of the purpose with a doubt, except in trivial matters. As for great matters, such as bringing down rain during drought, or removing a punishment that has descended, this shirk is of no benefit in them. As He the Exalted said:
Say, "Have you considered: if there came to you the punishment of Allah or there came to you the Hour قل أرأيتكم إن أتاكم عذاب الله أو أتتكم الساعة
[Al-An'am 6:40]
"

The Shaykh : Have you seen, is that how it is with you? I have "Have you seen" but in the mushaf it is with the kaf...
The reader: "As He the Exalted said:
(40) Say, "Have you considered: if there came to you the punishment of Allah or there came to you the Hour - is it other than Allah you would invoke, if you should be truthful?" (41) No, it is Him [alone] you would invoke, and He would remove that for which you invoked Him if He willed, and you would forget what you associate [with Him].
[Al-An'am 6:40-41]
. And He the Exalted said:
And when adversity touches you at sea, lost are [all] those you invoke except for Him. But when He delivers you to the land, you turn away [from Him]. And ever is man ungrateful.
[Al-Isra 17:67]
.
And He the Exalted said:
Is He [not best] who responds to the desperate one when he calls upon Him and removes evil and makes you inheritors of the earth
[An-Naml 27:62]
.
And He the Exalted said:
(56) Say, "Invoke those you have claimed [as gods] besides Him, for they do not possess the [ability for] removal of adversity from you or [for its] transfer [to someone else]." (57) Those whom they invoke seek means of access to their Lord, [striving as to] which of them would be nearest, and they hope for His mercy and fear His punishment. Indeed, the punishment of your Lord is ever feared.
[Al-Isra 17:56-57]
"
.

The Shaykh : Meaning, those whom they call upon besides Allah seek to their Lord the means of approach, who of them is nearest, meaning: they ask Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, for the means of approach that brings them closer to Allah, so they themselves are in need of the means of approach that brings them closer to Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, yes.
The reader: "And He the Exalted said:
(43) Or have they taken other than Allah as intercessors? Say, "Even though they do not possess [power over] anything, nor do they reason?" (44) Say, "To Allah belongs [the right to allow] intercession entirely أم اتخذوا من دون الله شفعاء قل أولو كانوا لا يملكون شيئًا ولا يعقلون. قل لله الشفاعة جميعًا
[Az-Zumar 39:43-44]
. The fact that these great requests are not answered "
.

The Shaykh : So it is.
The reader: He pointed to it.

The Shaykh : Yes, good, so it is better.
The reader: "So these great requests are not answered except by Him, the Exalted, indicates His oneness, and cuts off the doubt of one who associates partners with Him, and it is known thereby that what is less than this of responses is also done by Him, the Exalted, alone, with no partner, even if it occurs through forbidden or permissible means, just as His creation of the heavens and the earth, the winds and the clouds, and other great bodies, indicates His uniqueness, and that He is the Creator of everything, and that what is less than this being His creation is more fitting, since it is a reaction from His great creations, so the Creator of the complete cause is the Creator of the effect without doubt ".
