And We believe that Allah the Exalted has two noble, great hands << بل يداه مبسوطتان ينفق كيف يشآء >> [al-Ma'idah

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : He said, "And We believe that Allah the Exalted has two noble, great hands" Yes, "that Allah has hands" in our view, the dual form is used, "noble" describing them with nobility, "great" describing them with greatness. There must be evidence for each of these descriptions. As for the evidence for the dual form, it is the saying of Allah the Exalted:
Rather, both His hands are extended; He spends however He wills.
[Al-Ma'idah 5:64]
And Allah the Exalted said to Satan:
what prevented you from prostrating to that which I created with My hands?
[Sad 38:75]
This is evidence for the dual form. The evidence that they are noble is His saying:
extended مبسوطتان
And extending is the opposite of grasping. For this reason, it came in the hadith explaining this:
The hand of Allah is full, giving abundantly night and day
The scholars said that "sahha'" means abundant giving, abundant giving. This indicates that they are noble. Yes, and by Allah the Exalted, there is no one more noble than Allah.
His hand is full, giving abundantly night and day
The Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Have you seen what He has spent since He created the heavens and the earth?
Sahih Ibn Hibban 7:120
Tell me, is it little or much? It cannot be counted.
and what is in His right hand has not decreased?
Sahih Muslim 993b
Allah is the Greatest; it has not decreased. This is evidence of the greatness of the nobility of Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) and the abundance of His blessings. As for their being great, it is because of the saying of Allah the Exalted:
They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.
[Az-Zumar 39:67]
Meaning, these polytheists did not magnify Allah with the true magnification, for they made for Him equals that are worth nothing, that do not benefit and do not harm, and that have no power, no hearing, and no sight.
and the earth والأرض
This clause is a circumstantial clause, meaning, and the state is that the entire earth, with what is in it of mountains, rivers, trees, and others, is in His grasp on the Day of Resurrection. "Grasp" means, if I asked you, what is a grasp for us? A grasp is what a person grasps. A person grasps a morsel of food, for example, he grasps it like this.
the earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection
[Az-Zumar 39:67]
And it came in the hadith that Allah places the entire earth on one finger, the dust on one finger, the trees on one finger, and so on. Does this indicate greatness?
The student: Yes.

The Shaykh : Yes, by Allah, it indicates greatness. Add to this:
and the heavens will be folded in His right hand
[Az-Zumar 39:67]
The Day when We will fold the heaven like the folding of a [written] sheet for the records
[Al-Anbya 21:104]
The simile here is a simile for what? For the folding with the folding. But it does not mean that the heavens are like a book register. No, they are far greater. But because of their ease for Allah (Mighty and Majestic), they became like the folding of a book register. When a person writes a book, and in the past there were no conditions to put it in, they would fold it like this, then place wax on it. Yes, and the seal on the wax. Does the seal on the wax show or not? Because as long as the wax is hot, it is soft, so they corresponded with each other in this way, like the folding of a book register. So, the hand of Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is, first, two; second, noble; third, great. The evidence is:
They have not appraised Allah with true appraisal, while the earth entirely will be [within] His grip on the Day of Resurrection, and the heavens will be folded in His right hand. Exalted is He and high above what they associate with Him.
[Az-Zumar 39:67]
Good.
If someone asks us, are we allowed to ask: Does Allah have a right and a left hand, or is it just a right hand? Are we allowed to ask this question?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, why?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Because the Messenger and the Companions did not ask about it. But the Sunnah came that:
Both His hands are right
Both His hands are right
And it came:
And He takes the earth with His left hand.
Some of the scholars denied the word "left" and said, we do not say that Allah has a left, but we say as the Messenger said:
Both His hands are right
And some people affirmed it and said, this came in Sahih Muslim, and reconciling it with his saying:
Both His hands are right
is possible and easy. Because when the Messenger mentioned the right, he said:
Both His hands are right hands
from the right, which is the blessing. And he only said:
Both His hands are right
so that the one who thinks does not think that if he speaks about the other, it is deficient, as is the case with the created. The created one's right hand is what? Stronger, and it is the tool for taking and extending, and so on. So he said:
Both His hands are right
like his saying:
And to both Allah has promised the best [reward]
[An-Nisa 4:95]
so that the one who thinks does not think that the other being left implies deficiency. Yes, it implies its deficiency. So he clarified that there is no deficiency in it, even though it is described as left. The rule among the scholars is that whenever reconciliation is possible, what is it? It is obligatory to resort to it, and we do not say this is anomalous or this is not authentic. If reconciliation is possible, reconcile. Good. Does Allah have fingers?
The student: Yes...

The Shaykh : Where do we take that from?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes.
The student: ...

The Shaykh : how
The student: ...

The Shaykh : Yes, there are fingers. Allah has fingers. Is the establishment of fingers a necessary consequence of the establishment of the hand?
The student: No.

The Shaykh : No, but the fingers came by another evidence, indeed by evidences, among which is:
The hearts of the children of Adam are between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful.
As-Sunan al-Kubra lil-Nasa'i 56:80
This hadith: "The drum was beaten and the flute played." The deniers of the attributes (ta'tilah) said, "Praise be to Allah who guided us to this, and we would not have been guided had Allah not guided us." This indicates that the hand is not the true hand, and the finger is not the true finger. We said, why? They said, because the fingers of the Lord (Mighty and Majestic), the Messenger said in them:
between two of the fingers of the Most Merciful
Sunan Ibn Majah 3834
And we do not feel that there are fingers in our chests for Allah. Do you say it is true or not true? Yes, true. Allah is the Greatest. Touch your chest. Do you feel that there are fingers and that the heart is between them? What do you say?
The student: ...

The Shaykh : You say no, of course you say no. And this is the reality. So, "Praise be to Allah" means, it is now clear that our interpretation is correct, and that:
between two of the fingers of the Most Merciful
Sunan Ibn Majah 3834
is a metaphor for power and authority over the children of Adam. It is like His saying:
And know that Allah intervenes between a man and his heart
[Al-Anfal 8:24]
What do you say about this? Yes, it is not distortion; it is realization. Realization, no doubt. It is a doubt, a strong doubt, because they said, if you say it is true, we must feel that there are fingers grasping the heart.
Between two fingers.
So we say to them, do not look at the texts with the eye of the one-eyed person. The one-eyed person, if the blindness is in the right eye, the one on the right does not see correctly. Yes, he does not look with one eye only. For this reason, the one-eyed animal with obvious blindness is not sufficient for the sacrifice. Look at the texts from every side. Does it necessitate, from the fact that the hearts are between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful, that there is physical contact?
The student: No.

The Shaykh : It does not necessitate it. Did not Allah the Exalted say:
and the clouds controlled between the heaven and the earth
[Al-Baqarah 2:164]
Subjugated between the heaven and the earth? And does it touch the heaven? No. Does it touch the earth? No. So, being in between does not necessitate physical contact. It does not necessitate physical contact. If it does not necessitate physical contact, rather, the most correct is that it does not entail physical contact. If it does not entail physical contact, we say, the hearts are between two fingers of the fingers of the Most Merciful, and physical contact is not necessitated. Clear. And with this, we reconcile the evidences. We say, our hearts are between two fingers of the fingers of our Lord, and we ask Allah not to incline them. But physical contact is not necessitated by this. And we believe that it is true in its reality. But as we told you, Allah (Mighty and Majestic), by His wisdom, revealed the texts and made some of them ambiguous as a test from Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He) to test those who have inclination in their hearts from those who are firm in knowledge. For this reason, He said:
those firm in knowledge
[Ali 'Imran 3:7]
And He did not say, "The scholars, be careful, O brothers." The expression is:
in it are verses [that are] precise - they are the foundation of the Book - and others unspecific. As for those in whose hearts is deviation [from truth], they will follow that of it which is unspecific, seeking discord and seeking an interpretation [suitable to them] منه آيات محكمات هن أم الكتاب وأخر متشابهات فأما الذين في قلوبهم زيغ فيتبعون ما تشابه منه ابتغاء الفتنة وابتغاء تأويله
[Ali 'Imran 3:7]
Then He said:
But those firm in knowledge
[Ali 'Imran 3:7]
And He did not say, "And the scholars," indicating that the issue requires
The student: firmness in knowledge

The Shaykh : firmness in knowledge and encompassing knowledge of the texts and understanding of the meaning. The firm ones in knowledge say, there is no ambiguity and no contradiction.
All [of it] is from our Lord." And no one will be reminded except those of understanding. كل من عند ربنا وما يتذكر إلا أولو الألباب
[Ali 'Imran 3:7]
And the time is now over.

The questioner : Summarize the reconciliation between the right and the left.

The Shaykh : Yes, the summary is that we affirm that Allah has a left, and that the meaning of the saying of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him):
Both His hands are right
is from the right, which is the blessing. And that he said, when he mentioned:
I chose the right hand of my Lord, and both His hands are right, blessed.
that he mentioned it so that no one would imagine that the left is deficient. So he said:
Both His hands are right
