The questioner : It is said that if a person, whether male or female, enters the mosque on Friday while the imam is delivering the sermon, he should sit until the imam finishes his first sermon, then stand and pray two light rak'ahs. Is this prayer permissible at this time or not?

The Shaykh : This action is not correct or proper, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
If anyone of you enters a Mosque, he should not sit until he has offered a tworak` at prayer. إذا دخل أحدكم المسجد فلا يجلس حتى يصلي ركعتين
Sahih al-Bukhari 1167
This man sat down, so he has made a mistake and disobeyed the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) in this matter. However, if one enters the mosque while the imam is delivering the sermon, he should hasten before sitting down and pray two light rak'ahs, because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was delivering the Friday sermon to the people when a man entered and sat down. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said to him:
Did you pray? أصليت؟
He said: No. He said:
Then perform two Rak’ah, but make them brief. قم فصل ركعتين وتجوّز فيهما
Sunan Ibn Majah 1114Da’if (Darussalam)
This is what is prescribed: when a person enters while the imam is delivering the sermon, he should not sit until he prays two light rak'ahs, then he should listen to the sermon.
