Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :"And we believe that the trials that occurred among the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) were the result of interpretation in which they exercised independent legal reasoning".
Whoever reads the history of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them) will find in it what saddens him regarding the fighting among them and the trials, whether it was with Aishah and al-Zubayr and those who opposed them, or with Mu'awiyah and 'Ali ibn Abi Talib.
But we know that this was the result of interpretation, and what is the result of interpretation and independent legal reasoning, if its doer hit the truth, he has two rewards, and if he erred, he has one reward.
And this does not prevent us from saying that such and such is closer to the truth, and there is no harm in that. For example, the fighting that took place between Mu'awiyah (may Allah be pleased with him) and 'Ali ibn Abi Talib (may Allah be pleased with him); there is no doubt that the one closer to the truth in that matter is 'Ali ibn Abi Talib, because the Messenger of Allah said to 'Amir:
May Allah be Merciful to `Ammar. He will be inviting them (i.e. his murderers, the rebellious group) ويل عمار تقتله الفئة الباغية
Sahih al-Bukhari 447
And the companions of Mu'awiyah killed him.
But despite that, it is not permissible for us to harbor hatred or dislike for them. Rather, we say: what came from them was the result of interpretation and independent legal reasoning, and they are either one whose effort is appreciated or one whose independent legal reasoning is forgiven. So whoever hit the truth has two rewards, and whoever erred has one reward.
