Our Position Regarding the Fighting That Occurred Among the Companions

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The honorable Shaykh (may Allah preserve him): I am a history teacher, and in the history curriculum for the first year of middle school, we cover the battles of Siffin and al-Jamal,And we face some questions from the students: How did the Companions fight among themselves? They also bring up to us the hadith of the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him): (When two Muslims meet with their swords, the killer and the killed are in the Fire) What is our position in this situation?
Our position in this situation is to stand as the people of the Sunnah and the community stand toward what sowed discord among the Companions,And that is that we say: These are bloods from which Allah purified our swords, so let us purify our tongues from them,And in that, the poet says:
and we remain silent regarding the war of the Companions, for what occurred between them was pure independent legal reasoning (ijtihad)
They were those exercising independent legal reasoning, and not every one who exercises independent legal reasoning is correct; a person may exercise independent legal reasoning and make a mistake. This independent legal reasoning that occurred on their part undoubtedly occurred due to error, and error that stems from independent legal reasoning is forgiven;By the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him): (If a judge rules and exercises independent legal reasoning and is correct, he has two rewards; if he makes a mistake, he has one reward) .

So the obligatory: If a student asks us: How could this be from the Companions? That we say: Allah knows best.
It is obligatory for us to restrain our tongues from that and not to ask,And we say: Each of them was exercising independent legal reasoning, so whoever was correct has two rewards, and whoever made a mistake has one reward.
