Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: “And of His signs are the ships sailing on the sea like mountains.”
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh :[Ash-Shuraa 42:32] The particle “min” indicates part of a whole; “His signs” are His indicators pointing to His mercy, power, and wisdom. “Al-Jawar” is a postponed subject, but it is inflected with a presumed dammah on the deleted yaa for the sake of lightness. The original of “al-jawar” is “al-jawari” with a yaa, which is the plural of “jariyah,” and a “jariyah” is a ship, as Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Haqqah 69:11] Among the signs of Allah the Mighty and Majestic are these ships in the sea, upon the water, like mountains, meaning like mountains in magnitude. These great ships, loaded with wealth, people, and animals, are among the signs of Allah that they are in this surging sea, moving upon the water, cutting through the waves with the sustenance they carry. There is no doubt that they are among the signs of Allah the Mighty and Majestic.
