The benefits of the saying of Allah the Exalted: "And those who, when wronged, defend themselves."

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Among the benefits of this noble verse is that one of the characteristics of those who believe and put their trust in their Lord is that they do not accept humiliation or retreat from taking their right, as He said:
And those who, when tyranny strikes them, they defend themselves, الذين إذا أصابهم البغي هم ينتصرون
[Ash-Shuraa 42:39]
Is it a necessary consequence of defending oneself to seek retribution, or is it sufficient to have the upper hand, whether through retribution, forgiveness, or otherwise? The apparent view is the latter, because it is more comprehensive. Indeed, one who forgives while possessing the ability and strength to retaliate is undoubtedly a victor, and one who takes his right is also a victor.
Among the benefits of this noble verse is that these people do not defend themselves unless they are certain that they have been wronged, whereas mere accusation is not considered sufficient. This is derived from His saying:
when tyranny strikes them إذا أصابهم البغي
[Ash-Shuraa 42:39]
If they suspect that someone has wronged them, they do not take action, but when they are actually wronged, then they defend themselves.
Among the benefits of this verse is that it is obligatory for one who defends himself when wronged not to exceed the limit in taking retribution.
