The Ruling on Raising the Hands for Supplication After Prayer

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
What is your opinion, Your Eminence, regarding raising the hands for supplication after prayer? Is there a difference between the obligatory prayer and the voluntary prayer?

Answer:
Raising the hands in supplication is a recommended practice (sunnah) and one of the causes of acceptance, based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Your Lord is munificent and generous, and is ashamed to turn away empty the hands of a servant when he raises them to Himإن ربكم حيي كريم يستحيي من عبده إذا رفع يديه إليه أن يردهما صفرًا
Mishkat al-Masabih 2244
It was narrated by Abu Dawud, al-Tirmidhi, and Ibn Majah, and al-Hakim graded it as authentic, from the hadith of Salman al-Farisi. And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
Indeed Allah is Tayyib (good) and he does not accept but what is good. And indeed Allah ordered the believers with what He ordered the Messengersإن الله تعالى طيب ولا يقبل إلا طيبًا، وإن الله أمر المؤمنين بما أمر به المرسلين
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 2989Sahih (Darussalam)
, so the Exalted said:
O you who have believed, eat from the good things which We have provided for you and be grateful to Allah if it is [indeed] Him that you worship.
[al-Baqarah: 172] And He said :
[Allah said], "O messengers, eat from the good foods and work righteousness. Indeed, I, of what you do, am Knowing.يَا أَيُّهَا الرُّسُلُ كُلُوا مِنَ الطَّيِّبَاتِ وَاعْمَلُوا صَالِحًا إِنِّي بِمَا تَعْمَلُونَ عَلِيمٌ
[al-Mu'minun: 51]
He then made a mention of a person who travels widely, his hair disheveled and covered with dust. He lifts his hand towards the sky (and thus makes the supplication): "O Lord, O Lord," whereas his diet is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and his clothes are unlawful and his nourishment is unlawful. How can then his supplication be accepted?ثم ذكر الرجل يطيل السفر أشعث أغبر يمد يديه إلى السماء: يا رب يا رب ومطعمه حرام ومشربه حرام وملبسه حرام وغذي بالحرام فأنى يستجاب لذلك
Sahih Muslim 1015
Narrated by Muslim.
However, it is not prescribed to raise them in the places that existed in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) where he did not raise them, such as after the five daily prayers, between the two prostrations, before the closing salam of the prayer, and during the Friday and festival sermons; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not raise his hands in these places, and he (peace and blessings be upon him) is the best example in what he does and what he leaves. But if he seeks rain in the Friday sermon or the festival sermons, it is prescribed for him to raise his hands, as the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did.
As for the voluntary prayer, I am not aware of anything preventing one from raising the hands afterward in supplication, in accordance with the generality of the evidence. However, it is better not to make this a habit; because it is not established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did so. Had he done it after every voluntary prayer, it would have been reported from him; because the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them all) reported his words and deeds during his travels and his residence, and in all his other circumstances (peace and blessings be upon him), and may Allah be pleased with them all.
As for the famous hadith that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Prayer is humility and submission, and that you raise your hands and say, O my Lord, O my Lord.الصلاة تضرع وتخشع، وأن تقنع أي ترفع يديك تقول يارب يا رب
it is a weak hadith.
Al-Hafiz Ibn Rajab and others have clarified this, and success is from Allah.
