What is the ruling on raising the hands in supplication during the Friday sermon?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
The question has been asked often, O Shaykh, about raising the hands for supplication on Friday, and also when the imam supplicates for the congregation, raising his voice, and the congregation saying "Ameen"—is this correct or not?

Answer:
The Sunnah for the imam on Friday in the sermon is not to raise his hands. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) did not raise his hands, neither on Friday nor on the festival, and likewise the congregation does not raise their hands. However, if they say "Ameen" among themselves in response to his supplication, hearing the supplication and saying "Ameen" among themselves, there is no blame on them for that.
Raising the hands is only done in the sermon for seeking rain. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) sought rain and asked for the downpour, he raised his hands and sought rain. The Sunnah for the congregation is to raise their hands as well, just as the imam raised them; because the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) raised his hands, and the Companions raised their hands in seeking rain, asking for the downpour, asking for rain. As for Friday and the festival, the imam supplicates in the sermon, but he does not raise his hands, and likewise the congregation does not raise their hands. This is the Sunnah. Yes.
