Shortening the Prayer and Combining Prayers for a Traveler Within the City

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: We are three people who traveled from Riyadh to Qassim to spend Thursday and Friday there. Do we shorten the prayer and combine them, and are we required to pray with the congregation in the mosque?

A: It is prescribed for you to shorten the four-rak'ah prayers, but there is no shortening for Maghrib and Fajr. You are not required to pray in the mosques with the residents. If you pray with them, you must pray four rak'ahs, because the established Sunnah of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) indicates that if a traveler prays behind a resident, he prays four rak'ahs. You must pray Maghrib and Fajr with the residents in the mosques, because there is no shortening for them, and due to the generality of the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Whoever hears the call and does not come, his prayer is not valid, except for those who have an excuse.من سمع النداء فلم يأته فلا صلاة له إلا من عذر
Sunan Ibn Majah 793Sahih (Darussalam)
It was narrated by Ibn Majah and al-Daraqutni, and Ibn Hibban and al-Hakim graded it as authentic, and its chain meets the conditions of Muslim.
And his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) to Ibn Umm Maktum when he said: "O Messenger of Allah, I have no guide to lead me to the mosque. Do I have a dispensation to pray in my house?" He said:
Do you hear the call to prayer?هل تسمع النداء بالصلاة؟
Sahih Muslim 653
He said: Yes. He said:
Then respond.فأجب
It was narrated by Imam Muslim in his Sahih.
It is permissible for you to combine the two prayers, Zuhr and 'Asr, and Maghrib and 'Isha', because you are travelers. However, leaving it is better because you are staying. If you pray with the congregation in the mosques, it is likely better and more rewarding. And success is from Allah.
