Ruling on Placing a Marker on a Grave

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: What is the ruling on placing a marker on a grave?

A: There is nothing wrong with placing a marker on a grave to identify it, such as a stone or a bone, provided there is no writing or numbers; because numbers constitute writing, and it is authentically established that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) prohibited writing on graves. However, placing a stone on a grave or painting the stone black or yellow so that it serves as a marker for its owner causes no harm; because it is narrated that the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) placed a marker on the grave of Uthman ibn Maz'un.
