What is the ruling on placing markers on graves?

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
We see many people placing pieces of wood and iron on graves, and some place a distinctive tile in the middle of the grave, claiming it is a marker. Is it permissible to place such markers? And is it permissible to place a marker on a grave?

Answer:
Placing a marker is permissible: a stone, a plaque, a bone, an iron piece, or something by which the grave is identified; there is no harm in it. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) marked the grave of Uthman ibn Maz'un with a marker , and the scholars have stated this, but on the condition that there is no construction or exaggeration in it, but rather a marker placed on the grave, with no writing on it. No writing on graves... no writing, and no tribal branding; because that is writing.
