Zakah on a plot of land bought for the purpose of building, then sold

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I have a plot of land that I bought for the purpose of building on it. After a period of time, I needed to sell it, so I sold it. Do I owe zakah for the period during which I did not offer it for sale?

A: If the situation is as you described in the question, then you do not owe zakah for the time that passed before the sale, because the operative cause of the zakah is absent, which is the intention to sell, and you did not intend to sell. If a lunar year of possession passes after the intention to sell, then you owe its zakah, which is one-quarter of the tenth of its value for every year after the intention to sell.
