The Shaykh : You are welcome.

The questioner : If you please, a question...

The Shaykh: Go ahead.

The questioner : What is the transmitted practice of the Salaf regarding congratulating one another on the occasion of the month of Ramadan?

The Shaykh : I have just received a question, perhaps it isThe questioner : from your notes? Is that so? Ah, did you not hear it, or did you not understand?

The questioner : No, I did not understand.

The Shaykh : I say, before you ask, a questioner asked me this question, so perhaps it is from your notes?

The questioner : No.

The Shaykh : Do you have any good news at all regarding this question?

The questioner : No, I have no news. I am speaking from Libya.

The Shaykh : By Allah, I do not know where the one who asked me this question was from. In any case, I avoid the prevalent congratulation today, "May every year find you well." Then, make whatever supplication you wish for blessings in the month of Ramadan, such as asking Allah to help us with fasting and standing in night prayer, and to enable us to fulfill the rights of fasting, and the like. There is no transmitted congratulation that we must adhere to, but there is the avoidance of imitating the disbelievers, and the exhortation to differ from the disbelievers. The congratulation "May every year find you well" is the congratulation of the disbelievers, and it should be avoided. As for everything else, make whatever supplication you wish.
