The Ruling on Fasting and Breaking the Fast for One Whose Testimony Is Rejected

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: If a person sees the crescent moon but is unable to inform the authorities, or if his testimony is rejected, should he fast alone? Likewise, regarding the festival, should he break his fast alone?

Answer: Some scholars have held that he should fast alone, but the correct view is that it is not permissible for him to fast alone, nor to break his fast alone; rather, he must fast with the people and break his fast with them. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
The fast is the day the people fast, the breaking of the fast is the day the people break their fast, and the sacrifice is the day the people sacrifice.الصوم يوم تصومون، والفطر يوم تفطرون، والأضحى يوم تضحون
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 697Hasan (Darussalam)
However, if he is in the wilderness with no one else present, he acts according to his own sighting regarding fasting and breaking the fast.
