Ruling on paying Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of a sister
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Q: I am of Thai nationality, a student at one of the universities in Sudan, and I have a younger sister in my country, Thailand, who has not yet reached puberty. During the past months, I received tragic news that my father passed away, leaving my young sister behind. My question is: Is it obligatory for me to pay Zakat al-Fitr on her behalf? I note that she has no brother other than me to provide for her.
A: If your father passed away before the end of Ramadan and none of your relatives paid Zakat al-Fitr on behalf of your sister, then it is obligatory for you to pay Zakat al-Fitr on her behalf if you are able to do so. You must also send her maintenance sufficient to meet her needs according to your capacity; for Allah the Exalted said: [Al-Talaq: 7], and He said: [Al-Taghabun: 16].
And the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):Sunan Abi Dawud 1696Sahih (Al-Albani), and his saying (peace and blessings be upon him) when a man said to him: “O Messenger of Allah, who is the most deserving of my good conduct?” He said: He said: “Then who?” He said: He said: “Then who?” He said: Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1897Hasan (Darussalam) Muslim reported both in his Sahih.
And because providing for her is part of maintaining family ties, which is obligatory if there is no one to provide for her other than you, and your father did not leave her an inheritance sufficient to meet her needs. May Allah guide you both to all that is good.

Let a man of wealth spend from his wealth, and he whose provision is restricted - let him spend from what Allah has given him
لِيُنفِقْ ذُو سَعَةٍ مِّن سَعَتِهِ وَمَن قُدِرَ عَلَيْهِ رِزْقُهُ فَلْيُنفِقْ مِمَّا آتَاهُ اللَّهُSo fear Allah as much as you are able
فَاتَّقُوا اللَّهَ مَا اسْتَطَعْتُمْAnd the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
Anyone who cuts off relationship from his nearest relatives will not enter Paradise.
