Continuation of the explanation of the author's statement: "And as for the one who is in doubt, he says: 'Ha! Ha! I do not know. I heard the people saying something, so I said it.'"

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : The one who is in doubt is the one who is uncertain, the hypocrite, and those similar to them. He says: "Ha! Ha! I do not know. I heard the people saying something, so I said it" — we ask Allah for safety from that. Faith did not enter his heart; he was only saying what the people were saying, without faith reaching his heart.
Consider his saying: "Ha! Ha!" as if something had escaped his memory and he is trying to recall it. This is more severe in terms of regret: he imagines that he knows this answer, but then he says, "Ha! Ha!" and then says, "I heard the people saying something, so I said it."
He does not say: "My Lord is Allah!" nor: "My religion is Islam!" nor: "My Prophet is Muhammad!" Why? Because in this world, he was one who was in doubt and uncertain! Is it true that Allah (Mighty and Majestic) is your Lord, the Manager, the Creator? Yes. Is it true that there is a religion called the religion of Islam? Is it true? Is it true that there is a Messenger who is Muhammad (peace and blessings be upon him)? He is in doubt.
This is when he is asked in his grave and becomes most in need of the correct answer. He is unable — may Allah protect us from that — and says: "I do not know. I heard the people saying something, so I said it."
So, is his faith merely verbal and not creedal? Verbal only. He hears the people saying "We believe, we believe," so he says "We believe," but he is not a believer
And of the people are some who say, "We believe in Allah and the Last Day," but they are not believers. فمن الناس من يقول آمنا بالله وباليوم الآخر وما هم بمؤمنين

The Shaykh : Yes.

The Shaykh : That is, the difference is that the hypocrite in that regard is in the ruling of a disbeliever, in the ruling of a disbeliever. But he displays Islam. Yes, that is right.
The student: They treat him as a hypocrite. The Mu'tazilah say regarding the one who commits a major sin that we should treat him as a Muslim.

The Shaykh : The open sinner is treated as a disbeliever in this world and in the Hereafter. Yes, that is right.
The student: They made him like a hypocrite.

The Shaykh : They made him like a hypocrite. Yes, that is right. But despite that, they are contradictory; they say if you treat him as a Muslim in the rulings of this world... in the rulings of the Hereafter as well.
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : The hypocrite is in the lowest depth of the Fire. But they say that the hypocrite who has not committed a major sin should be treated in this world as... and his affair is left to Allah.
