Exegesis of the saying of Allah the Exalted: (( That Allah may punish the hypocrite men and the hypocrite women... ))

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The Shaykh : Then He, the Mighty and Majestic, said:
so that Allah may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the men and women who associate others with Him and that Allah may accept repentance from the believing men and believing women
[Al-Ahzab 33:73]
This means that Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, has made clear to us the trust. He offered it to the heavens, the earth, and the mountains, but they refused to carry it, and man carried it because of this outcome. What is the outcome?
so that Allah may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women and the men and women who associate others with Him and that Allah may accept repentance from the believing men and believing women
[Al-Ahzab 33:73]
These are three categories. Three categories into which creation is divided:
The first: the hypocrites.
The second: the polytheists.
The third: the believers.
Listen, my brother, and look at the path you will take.
so that Allah may punish the hypocrite men and hypocrite women
[Al-Ahzab 33:73]
Who are the hypocrites? The hypocrites are those who display Islam and conceal disbelief. They display Islam and say: I bear witness that there is no god but Allah and I bear witness that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah. They attend the prayer and give charity. But their hearts are ruined, empty of faith. May Allah protect me and you from that! O Allah, protect us from hypocrisy. This type of person emerged when the Muslims gained strength and honor. But in Makkah before the migration, there were no hypocrites; people were either explicit believers or explicit disbelievers. But when the strength of the believers grew, especially after the disbelievers were defeated at Badr, and when was that, brother? A specific question: when was Badr? In the second year of the Hijrah, in Ramadan. When the polytheists were defeated, hypocrisy began, because they—the hypocrites—knew that Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, would make his religion manifest. So they displayed Islam and concealed disbelief. And Allah revealed a complete surah from the long surahs of the final part of the Qur'an regarding them. It is His saying, the Exalted:
When the hypocrites come to you
[Al-Munafiqun 63:1]
. So they would attend the prayer. But when they stood for prayer, they stood lazily. They would give charity, but it was for showing off and reputation. They would come to the Messenger, peace and blessings be upon him, and say: We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah. Glory be to Allah! We bear witness that you are indeed the Messenger of Allah. So what did Allah say about them? Allah the Exalted said:
And Allah knows that you are His Messenger, and Allah testifies that the hypocrites are liars.
[Al-Munafiqun 63:1]
Meaning: they are liars in their saying: We bear witness, because they say with their mouths what is not in their hearts. And therefore, when they need this word, they are unable to produce it. Indeed, when a hypocrite is buried in his grave and his companions leave him, two angels come to him and ask him: Who is your Lord? What is your religion? Who is your Prophet? He says: Hmm, hmm, I do not know. I heard people saying something, so I said it! Look, he says: I do not know. Why? Because there is no faith in his heart. And the Hereafter is built on inner secrets, not on appearances. In this world, it is built on appearances, as the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him, said when permission was sought to kill the hypocrites:
Leave him, lest the people say Muhammad kills his companions: لا. لا يتحدث الناس أن محمداً يقتل أصحابه
Sahih al-Bukhari 4907
. In the Hereafter, what is the criterion? The inner secrets.
(9) But does he not know that when the contents of the graves are scattered (10) And that within the breasts is obtained,
[Al-'Adiyat 100:9-10]
,
(8) Indeed, Allah, to return him [to life], is Able. (9) The Day when secrets will be put on trial,
[At-Tariq 86:8-9]
. O Allah, purify our inner secrets. O Allah, purify our inner secrets. O Allah, purify our inner secrets, O Lord of the worlds. And let us die upon faith and the oneness of Allah.
O my brothers, the hypocrites have a tendency to deviate from the truth. And so, among their characteristics is that when they speak, they lie. And the most false of their speech is when they say: We bear witness that there is no god but Allah and that Muhammad is the Messenger of Allah, and they are liars in this; they do not believe in it. When they make a covenant, they betray. They do not fulfill the covenant, because they have no faith to compel them to fulfill the covenant. When they dispute, they transgress. They deny what is due to them and claim what is not theirs. When they are trusted, they betray.
My Muslim brother: these are the signs of hypocrisy. These are the signs of hypocrisy. These are the signs of hypocrisy. So beware of being described with any one of them, because our Prophet Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, warned us against them. And now, if you look at the reality of Muslims today, you will find that many of them, when they speak, lie, and when they promise, they break their word, and when they dispute, they transgress, and when they are trusted, they betray. I ask you, is this the reality? That many Muslims—most of them, and praise be to Allah, most of them are upright—is this the reality? Yes, among them are those who, when they speak to you, lie to you, and when they promise you, they break their word to you, and when they covenant with you, they betray you, and when they dispute with you, they transgress against you. How many come to us complaining about their guarantors! He brings him on a known contract between them, then he does not fulfill the covenant, does not fulfill the contract, he delays the wage and perhaps denies it, and he harms the worker and burdens him with what is not obligatory upon him, and so on. Fine. There are also those who, when trusted, betray. And how many there are! When they are trusted, they betray. And how much betrayal there is in many people! For example, a person displays his goods, and a customer comes to buy, and asks: What is the value of this? He says: One thousand riyals, and its actual value is five hundred. But he took advantage of this buyer's ignorance of the price and said: One thousand riyals. What do you say about this? This combines lying, betrayal, and treachery. Three characteristics of the characteristics of the hypocrites. And he does not know that the material gain resulting from this lie is forbidden. And it is likely that the one who eats what is forbidden will not have his supplication accepted, because the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said:
He then made a mention of a person who travels widely, his hair disheveled and covered with dust. He lifts his hand towards the sky (and thus makes the supplication): "O Lord, O Lord," whereas his diet is unlawful, his drink is unlawful, and his clothes are unlawful and his nourishment is unlawful. How can then his supplication be accepted? !
Sahih Muslim 1015
. And among the betrayal of trust is what many guardians of women do in marriage. You find a righteous, upright man in his religion and character proposing to him. But when he knows that he will not give him money, he rejects him. He says: The girl is young, the girl is too good for you, and the like of that. Then he marries her to his cousin who has no character or religion, or he marries her to someone who is not her cousin but gives more money to her father. And this, by Allah, is betrayal. And the girl will demand accountability from him on the Day of Resurrection, and at that time
(34) On the Day a man will flee from his brother (35) And his mother and his father (36) And his wife and his children,
['Abasa 80:34-36]
. Why do you prevent the woman from a suitable suitor for your personal benefit? Is this not betrayal? Is this not injustice? Glory be to Allah! If you, O father, had proposed to a woman and then been prevented from her, you would consider this thing arrogant and count it as injustice and tyranny. And the wonder is that these people wrong those closest to them, and who are they? Their daughters, who are a part of the father, a piece of him, a part of him. And yet he wrongs her with this injustice, restricting her to his cousin or saying: Do not marry a man from outside the tribe, or the like of this! This is from what is wrong. And the judges have the right to intervene in this matter, meaning: if a woman is proposed to by a suitable suitor and her father refuses, she has the right to raise the matter to the judge, and he will say to her father: Marry her, or I will marry her, or the one who follows you in guardianship from your residuary heirs. Among the betrayal, which is one of the characteristics of the hypocrites, is what Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, mentioned in His saying:
(1) Woe to those who give less [than due], (2) Who, when they take a measure from people, take in full. (3) But if they give by measure or by weight to them, they cause loss.
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:1-3]
. If he measures for himself, he measures fully, and if he measures for others, he reduces,
they give less يخسرون
meaning: they reduce. Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, said:
(4) Do they not think that they will be resurrected (5) For a tremendous Day - (6) The Day when mankind will stand before the Lord of the worlds?
[Al-Mutaffifin 83:4-6]
. And among the betrayal of trust is what some people do with their families. They please them with what Allah has forbidden upon them. They please them with what Allah has forbidden upon them, bringing to them from the visible, read, and heard media what contains affliction and misery. And this is betrayal of the trust. And he will be held accountable before Allah, the Mighty and Majestic, on the Day of Resurrection, due to the saying of Allah, the Mighty and Majestic:
O you who have believed, protect yourselves and your families from a Fire whose fuel is people and stones
[At-Tahrim 66:6]
Look:
protect yourselves and your families
[At-Tahrim 66:6]
So He made the protection of the family like the protection of the self. And the Prophet, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, said:
a man is the guardian of his family
Sahih al-Bukhari 893
Complete
and he is accountable for his flock
, he is responsible before Allah on the Day of Resurrection. I ask Allah to help me and you in performing this great trust. You must direct your family, sons, daughters, wives, and others over whom you have guardianship, to the straight path, the upright path. And do not think that you are ever free from responsibility. Allah, the Lord of the worlds, has burdened you with it, and the Messenger of the Lord of the worlds, Muhammad, peace and blessings be upon him and his family, has burdened you with it.
Among the signs of hypocrisy is that some people engage in showing off, meaning they perform acts of worship so that people will say, "So-and-so is a worshipper." May Allah protect us from showing off, and from the one who shows off, for Allah will expose him, either in this world or in the Hereafter. Also included in this is giving charity in front of people so that they will say, "So-and-so is generous," rather than seeking to draw near to the Lord of the Worlds. This showing off invalidates the deed. Allah, Mighty and Majestic, said in the authentic, sacred hadith:
I am the One, One Who does not stand in need of a partner. If anyone does anything in which he associates anyone else with Me, I shall abandon him with one whom he associates with Allah.
Sahih Muslim 2985
. When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him and his family) was asked about a man who fights the enemies of Allah, fights with bravery, fights out of pride, and fights out of showing off—which of these is in the cause of Allah?—he said:
Whoever fought so that the Word of Allah is supreme, then he is in Allah's cause.
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1646Sahih (Darussalam)
. So, showing off in deeds nullifies them. And O my Muslim brother! What benefit do people bring you? What do they benefit you if you see them? And what harm do they cause you if you are sincere in your deeds for Allah and leave them alone? They will not harm you in any way through sincerity. And they harm you through showing off. It is you who have harmed yourself. Beware, my brother, of hypocrisy. Beware of doctrinal and practical hypocrisy. Doctrinal hypocrisy is in the heart; may Allah protect me and you from it. And practical hypocrisy is through the limbs.
