The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, Lord of the worlds, and may peace and blessings be upon our Prophet Muhammad, and upon his family and all his Companions. We have previously stated that among the principles of the people of the Sunnah and the community is the affirmation of the miracles (karamat) of the awliya (close friends of Allah). We said that karamat are of two types: one type relates to knowledge and spiritual unveiling, and the other type relates to power and effects. We said that all of this has occurred in this Ummah (the Muslim community) and in others. For example, what happened to Maryam, when she shook the palm tree trunk and fresh dates fell upon her, is this from the category of what? It is from the category of power and effects. And what happened to the one who had knowledge from the Scripture, when he said to Sulayman:
I will bring it to you before your glance returns to you. أَنَا آتِيكَ بِهِ قَبْلَ أَنْ يَرْتَدَّ إِلَيْكَ طَرْفُكَ
[An-Naml 27:40]
This is also from the category of power and effects. And what happened to the one
He said, "How will Allah bring this to life after its death?" So Allah caused him to die for a hundred years; then He revived him. قَالَ أَنَّى يُحْيِي هَذِهِ اللَّهُ بَعْدَ مَوْتِهَا فَأَمَاتَهُ اللَّهُ مِائَةَ عَامٍ ثُمَّ بَعَثَهُ
[Al-Baqarah 2:259]
is also from the category of power and effects. All of this has occurred. We mentioned that the benefits of karamat are three: the first is to demonstrate the power of Allah (Mighty and Majestic); the second is to honor this wali (close friend of Allah); and the third is to honor him and support him... and the third is to support the truth that is with him, to support the truth that is with him. We mentioned, yes, there is one, what is it?
The student: ... .

The Shaykh : That it is a sign for the one who is followed, that it is a sign for those who follow him. We also mentioned that among the Mu'tazilah (a rationalist theological sect) and some of the innovating sects are those who denied karamat on the grounds that they resemble the prophetic miracles, and the miracles, and the magical acts, or the Satanic supernatural acts. We mentioned that their statement is refuted by the Book, the Sunnah, and reality, and that confusion is prevented because the Prophet's miracle comes from whom? It comes from the Prophet. The wali's (close friend of Allah) karamah comes from a follower of the Prophet. Because the one who is honored, what is said about him? It is said that he is one of the servants of Allah, and it is not said that he is a Prophet. As for the Satanic supernatural magical acts, they do not come from a wali (close friend of Allah) nor from a Prophet; they come from a wali (close friend of Allah) of the Shayatins (Satan), and they usually come through fabrication and exposure to them, unlike the karamah. A karamah comes from Allah without exposure to it, except perhaps through supplication or something similar. Are karamat present in the previous nations or not? They are present in the previous nations. Among them is the story of the people of the cave, upon whom the rock closed. Are they present in the time of the Messenger? Yes, they are present in the time of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him), such as the story of Usayd ibn Hudayr and others of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and the multiplication of food among some of the Companions (may Allah be pleased with them), and the like. All of these are from the karamat.
Are they present among the Tabi'un (the generation after the Companions)? They are present. And I am now mentioning to you the man who supplicated to Allah to bring his horse back to life. He is Sallam ibn Ashim.
