The Shaykh : And the definitive scholarly consensus that the obligatory prayers are five in every day and night. Whoever denies the obligation of one of them has committed disbelief, because he is contradicting Allah, His Messenger, and the consensus of the Muslims. The stronger position is that nothing is obligatory other than these five prayers, because the abundant evidence indicates that the obligatory prayers are five. Indeed, the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) was asked:
Do I have to do anything else?' He said: 'No, unless you do it voluntarily.' هل عليّ غيرها؟ قال لا إلا أن تطوع
Sunan an-Nasa'i 458Sahih (Darussalam)
An exception to this is what has a specific cause, for it may be said that what has a cause is obligatory when its cause is present, if the condition for obligation is met. This does not contradict what we said that nothing is obligatory other than the five prayers, because prayers with causes are tied to their causes. An example of this is the greeting of the mosque, for many scholars said it is obligatory, and the eclipse prayer, for many scholars said it is obligatory. As for the witr, it has been said to be obligatory, but the correct view is that it is not obligatory, because the witr has no specific cause; rather, it revolves with the day and night, and no prayer is obligatory by the revolution of the day and night except the five prayers. Now, it has been mentioned previously that its obligation has conditions: reaching puberty, sanity, Islam, and the absence of a barrier. Reaching puberty, sanity, Islam, and the absence of a barrier. Regarding the absence of a barrier, we say it is a condition for the sake of clarification; otherwise, the absence of a barrier is not a condition in itself, but there is a difference between the two. The barrier is menstruation and post-natal bleeding. A woman may be of age, sane, and Muslim, yet prayer is not obligatory upon her due to the presence of the barrier, which is menstruation and post-natal bleeding, by consensus as well.
