Reading and commentary on the poet's introduction: There is no way to this except by knowing His attributes and His names

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
The reader: "There is no way to this except by knowing His attributes and His names. The more a servant knows of them, the more he knows of Allah, the more he seeks Him, and the closer he is to Him. The more he is ignorant of them, the more ignorant he is of Allah, the more he is averse to Him, and the farther he is from Him. Allah the Exalted places a servant in His own regard where the servant places Him in his own regard. So whoever hates the mention of His names and attributes, and is averse to them and drives others away from them, Allah hates him more intensely, turns away from him more greatly, and despises him more severely. Until hearts return to two types: a heart"

The Shaykh : A heart
The reader: "A heart whose remembrance of the names and attributes"

The Shaykh : The remembrance of the names
The reader: "The remembrance of the names and attributes is its strength and its life"

The Shaykh : Its strength
The reader: "Its strength, its life, its bliss, and the delight of its eye. If the remembrance of them and love for them were to leave it for even a moment, it would cry out, 'O Turner of hearts, make my heart firm upon Your religion.' So the tongue of its state says:
The heart is required to forget you *** But the nature refuses to be carried away"

The Shaykh : To be carried away
The reader: To be carried away, and it says: When I ask

The Shaykh : When I ask my heart
The reader: "When I ask my heart to forget, I find my entrails miserly about it
And it says: When we are ill, we seek cure in your remembrance *** So if we leave the remembrance at times, we relapse.
And it is impossible for a heart to remember One who is a warrior against His attributes, averse to hearing them, and completely turned away from them, while claiming that safety lies in that. No, by Allah, he"
..

The Shaykh : This is a problem that occurs for some people who say, "There is no benefit in researching the names and attributes of Allah. Leave us alone with this. This is something people have already finished with." In reality, no one says that except a person who, as Ibn al-Qayyim (may Allah have mercy on him) said, is in great danger. For knowing the names and attributes of Allah is the strength and spirit of the heart. It is not possible for a person to love Allah with the utmost love and magnify Allah with the utmost magnification except by knowing His names and attributes. The Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) encouraged this until he said:
Indeed, Allah has ninety-nine Names, whoever counts them shall enter Paradise. إن لله تسعة وتسعين اسما من أحصاها دخل الجنة
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 3508Sahih (Darussalam)
This is a great reward. Paradise is not a trivial matter; it is not attained except for something that is the greatest of things. Then the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) did not specify these names. If he had specified them for us, much of the burden would have been lifted from us, and we would not have labored to acquire them. But he left it to research, reflection, and extracting them from the Book of Allah and the Sunnah of His Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him), so that it would be known who is eager for them and who is not.
