What is meant by the term "turning away" in the hadiths, such as his saying (peace and blessings be upon him): "Do not precede me in bowing, prostrating, or turning away"?

The questioner: In my view, the meaning of "turning away" in the hadith of the Messenger (peace and blessings be upon him) is...

The Shaykh: What is it?

The questioner: The meaning of "turning away" in the hadiths, such as his saying (peace and blessings be upon him):
do not precede me in bowing and prostration and in standing and turning (faces, i. e. In pronouncing salutation) لا تسبقوني بالركوع ولا بالسجود ولا بالانصراف
Sahih Muslim 426a
.

The Shaykh: I mean, turning away means before the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) taslim. It is not permissible for the follower, according to this single view, to say the taslim before the imam’s taslim. This is the first view, and there is no disagreement on it. The second view is explained by the hadith of Umm Salama in "Sahih al-Bukhari," where she said: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) would remain for a short while after saying the taslim from the prayer."

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh: "So we thought that his remaining was so that the women would turn away before the men." This second meaning is also correct, because the path at that time was a single path, and as you know, it was not as wide as the ones existing today. So there would be mixing between the women and the men if they all went out at the same time, immediately after the Prophet’s (peace and blessings be upon him) taslim from the prayer. Therefore, he prohibited the men from turning away before the Prophet. The Prophet would say the taslim and remain for a short while until the women had left the mosque, then he (peace and blessings be upon him) would stand up, and those who wanted to turn away would stand up and turn away after his (peace and blessings be upon him) turning away.

The questioner: (peace and blessings be upon him) means that it continues to this day, right, Shaykh?

The Shaykh: It must, yes.

The questioner: I mean, it continues as it is.

The Shaykh : Yes, yes.

The questioner : May Allah bless you, O Shaykh.

The Shaykh : And may He reward you.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : And may Allah protect you, if Allah wills.

The questioner : ...

The Shaykh: Welcome, peace be upon you.
