The Manner of Greeting the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him)

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: What is the ruling on greeting the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) for the visitor to the Prophet’s Mosque? And is there a specific manner of greeting him (peace and blessings be upon him) in front of his grave while facing away from the qiblah?

Answer: In the name of Allah, and praise is due to Allah. It is recommended (sunnah) for one who visits Madinah to visit the Prophet’s Mosque and pray in it. If it is easy for him to pray in the Rawdah, that is better. Then he should greet the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his two companions (may Allah be pleased with them both).
The sunnah is for the visitor to face the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) and his two companions (may Allah be pleased with them both) when greeting them and say: “Peace be upon you, O Messenger of Allah, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings.” If he supplicates for him (peace and blessings be upon him), for example saying: “May Allah reward you for your Ummah with good, multiply your good deeds, and do you good as you did good to the Ummah,” there is no blame on him for that.
Likewise, if he says: “I bear witness that you conveyed the message, fulfilled the trust, advised the Ummah, and struggled in the cause of Allah with true struggle,” there is no blame on him for that; because all of this is the truth. Then he should greet his two companions (may Allah be pleased with them both) and supplicate for them with appropriate supplications.
As for if he wants to supplicate for himself, he should turn to another place, face the qiblah, and supplicate, as the scholars have explicitly stated.
It is recommended (mustahabb) for the Muslim to visit the Prophet’s Mosque specifically from his country or elsewhere, just as it is prescribed (mashru') for him to visit the Sacred Mosque and visit the Al-Aqsa Mosque if that is possible. This is based on the saying of the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him):
One should not undertake journeys except to three mosques: al-Masque al-Haram (in Makkah ), the Aqsa mosque, or this mosque (in Madinah).لا تشد الرحال إلا إلى ثلاثة مساجد: المسجد الحرام، ومسجدي هذا، والمسجد الأقصى
Bulugh al-Maram 5:58
. And he (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Prayer in this mosque of mine is better than a thousand prayers in any other place, except the Sacred Mosque. And prayer in the Sacred Mosque is better than prayer in this mosque of mine by a hundred prayers.صلاة في مسجدي هذا خير من ألف صلاة فيما سواه إلا المسجد الحرام، والصلاة في المسجد الحرام أفضل من صلاة في مسجدي هذا بمائة صلاة
. By this, it is known that prayer in the Sacred Mosque is better than one hundred thousand prayers in any other place, except the Prophet’s Mosque.
It was reported from him (peace and blessings be upon him) that prayer in the Al-Aqsa Mosque is better than five hundred prayers in any other place, and the meaning is any place other than the Sacred Mosque and the Prophet’s Mosque. And success is from Allah.
