The Ruling on Naming Oneself with Names Not Dedicated to Allah
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: From Abdul Aziz ibn Abdullah ibn Baz, to the honorable brother, the Director of Passports and Nationality in Rabigh, may Allah guide him to all that is good, amen.
Peace be upon you, and the mercy of Allah and His blessings. After that:
A man came to me who had named himself Abdullah ibn Abd al-Jizy, and asked me whether it is permissible to be named Abd al-Jizy, because the passport office had stopped renewing his residency permit until the ruling of the Shari'ah regarding his father's name was known.
Answer: The scholars have agreed that it is not permissible to dedicate oneself to anyone other than Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), so it is not permissible to say Abd al-Nabi, or Abd al-Husayn, or Abd al-Ka'bah, or the like; because all slaves are slaves of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him). It is known that al-Jizy is not among the beautiful names of Allah, so it is not permissible to dedicate oneself to it. It is obligatory to change this name to a name dedicated to Allah (Glorified and Exalted is He), or to another name not dedicated, such as Ahmad, Muhammad, Ibrahim, or the like. When changing it, it is obligatory to clarify in the residency permit the first name along with the new name, so that the rights related to the first name are not lost.
This is what I know from the pure Shari'ah. The aforementioned Abdullah mentions that his father has agreed to change his name from Abd al-Jizy to Abd al-Rahman, so that should be relied upon if his father agrees to it. We ask Allah to guide everyone to what pleases Him, and may peace and the mercy of Allah and His blessings be upon you.
