Permissibility of Prolonging Absence from One's Wife for the Purpose of Seeking Livelihood

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: What is the ruling on a man who prolongs his travel such that he is absent from his wife and children for a year or two due to seeking livelihood, work commitments, and some debts?

Answer: There is no blame on him if he travels to seek livelihood or seek knowledge; there is no blame in that even if the duration is long. However, if it is feasible for him to come to his family from time to time, out of concern for safety and chastity, he should do so as much as possible, whether once every six months or every four months. If he is able to do so, he combines the benefits: he comes to them after six months or four months, stays with them for a few days, and then returns. If that is difficult for him, he is excused.
