He also has a final question, asking: How long does the Islamic Shari'ah permit a man to be absent from his wife—referring to sexual intercourse in this context—given that some men are absent from their wives in pursuit of livelihood outside their homelands?
Answer: We do not know of a specific limit in the Shari'ah regarding absence, but it is narrated from 'Umar ibn al-Khattab (may Allah be pleased with him) that he set it at six months. If it is possible for the husband not to be absent for more than six months, that is preferable and safer. If he is absent for a longer period for the sake of seeking livelihood or seeking knowledge, there is no harm in that, if Allah wills.
The presenter: Thank you, His Eminence Shaykh Abd al-Aziz.
