Is it permissible to sell a gold chain, given that it is forbidden, and considering the hadith that states: (The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon Fatimah and saw a chain in her hand, so he became angry)

The questioner: Peace be upon you.

The Shaykh: And upon you peace.

The questioner : How is our Shaykh Abu 'Abd al-Rahman?

The Shaykh : Praise be to Allah, I am well.

The questioner : I will ask you one or two questions.

The Shaykh: Go ahead.

The questioner : May Allah increase you in His bounty.

The Shaykh : May Allah preserve you.

The questioner : A hadith was narrated from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him), and you have cited it in many of the books you have authored.

The Shaykh: Yes.

The questioner : The hadith, naturally, is: "The Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) entered upon Fatimah and saw a chain in her hand, so he became angry and left." Naturally, this hadith continues: "He left the house, so she sold the chain, then bought a slave with the proceeds, and then freed her ." The point of the hadith is that it became clear to me that wearing the chain is forbidden, so how is it permissible to sell it?

The Shaykh : Naturally, it is permissible to sell it, first, because it is wealth that has value and it is not permissible to waste it. That is the first point.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Second, if the matter revolves between two harms, the Muslim should choose the one with the lesser harm.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Third and finally, it is not necessary to assume that she sold the chain to a Muslim woman like herself, or to a Muslim man who would adorn his wife or daughter with it.

The questioner: Yes.

The Shaykh : Rather, we hold a good opinion of Lady Fatimah (may Allah be pleased with her) that, after she learned from her father and Prophet that adorning oneself with such a gold chain is not permissible for a Muslim woman, and given her religion and the knowledge she gained from her father, she would not sell it except to a disbeliever or a disbelieving woman. This is the lesser of the two evils.

The questioner : May Allah reward you with good.

The Shaykh : And beware of that.

The questioner : The other question.

The Shaykh: Yes.
