The Ruling on Obeying One's Father in Working in an Interest-Based Bank

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
This is a message from the questioner (M. H. M.) from the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia. He says in his message: I am a young man who studies in school throughout the academic year. When the summer vacation comes, my father wants me to work during this vacation in one of the banks that deals with riba (usury or interest). Should I obey my father and work in the bank during the vacation, or is it not permissible for me to obey him? And how do I convince him?
Answer: Working in interest-based banks is a reprehensible matter that is not permissible. Allah (Exalted and Majestic is He) has widened the path and made the matter easy. He has not confined people's earnings to what is forbidden; rather, He has provided them with many sources of earnings, all of which are lawful, such as buying and selling, agriculture, and various industries, among other types of good earnings. As for working in banks, it is assisting in sin and transgression, and cooperating in riba (usury or interest). It is authentically reported from the Messenger of Allah (peace and blessings be upon him) that
cursed the accepter of interest and its payer, and one who records it, and the two witnesses, and he said: They are all equal.لعن آكل الربا وموكله وكاتبه وشاهديه وقال: هم سواء
Sahih Muslim 1598
It was narrated by Muslim in the Sahih. Therefore, it is obligatory for you not to work in banks. You should excuse yourself to your father with a suitable excuse and clarify to him that this is cooperation with them in sin and transgression, which is not permissible; so that he is convinced and knows that you are correct.
The conclusion is: You do not obey him in this, for obedience is only in what is good. However, you respond to him with a beautiful response, address him with good speech, and excuse yourself to him with a beautiful excuse. You say: "O my father! It is hard for me to disobey you, and I love to obey you in everything. But obedience to Allah is above that, and the right of Allah is above that. So I hope you will excuse me and be lenient with me. May Allah forgive you and reward you with good," and similar good words. If he is satisfied, praise be to Allah. If not, leave the sin even if he is not satisfied, but you must always strive in obeying him, in convincing him, in seeking his pleasure, and in being humble to him as much as possible.
The presenter: Yes, may Allah reward you with good and may Allah bless you.
