It is not permissible to delay the marriage of the youngest daughter

Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question: We have a custom in our town, and I do not know if it is a custom or a prescribed practice? I would like to see the Sharia ruling on it, which is: some families refrain from marrying off the youngest daughter when a suitor proposes to her, as a courtesy to her older sister who has not had a suitor propose to her?

Answer: This custom is bad and it is not permissible to do it. It is obligatory for the woman’s guardian to marry her off if a suitable suitor whose religion and character are acceptable proposes to her, provided she is pleased with it, even if she is the youngest. It is not permissible to delay her marriage until the older sister is married; because the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
When someone whose religion and character you are pleased with proposes to (someone under the care) of one of you, then marry to him. If you do not do so, then there will be turmoil (Fitnah) in the land and abounding discord (Fasad).إذا خطب إليكم من ترضون دينه وخلقه فزوجوه، إلا تفعلوا تكن فتنة في الأرض وفساد عريض
Jami` at-Tirmidhi 1084Da'if (Darussalam)
, and because delaying the marriage of the youngest until the older sister is married is injustice to the youngest, and a cause for both of them to remain unmarried. And the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) said:
Be on your guard against committing oppression, for oppression is a darkness on the Day of Resurrectionاتقوا الظلم؛ فإن الظلم ظلمات يوم القيامة
Sahih Muslim 2578
.
So my advice to all guardians is to fear Allah, to strive to marry off their wards to suitable men, and to beware of wronging them and delaying their marriage without right. May Allah guide them all.
