The Grading of the Hadith "O Allah, keep me alive in poverty..."
Machine translationRead the Arabic original
Question:
Is it permissible for a person to supplicate: "O Allah, keep me alive in poverty, let me die in poverty, and gather me in the company of the poor"?
Answer:
There is a hadith regarding this, but it is weak. This hadith is weak, and I do not see such a supplication being established; because the hadith is weak. However, one should ask his Lord that Allah makes him independent of people, and that Allah helps him to fulfill the rights [of others]; because wealth contains great good. If Allah helps its owner, there is great good in it: he gives charity, does good, spends in the path of Allah, supports the poor, maintains the mosques, and spends in jihad. So wealth contains good. The grateful rich person is better than the patient poor person, according to the correct view.
When the Prophet (peace and blessings be upon him) mentioned the deeds of the rich people, and the poor people said: "O Messenger of Allah, the people of wealth have taken away the rewards. They pray as we pray..." [the hadith continues]; he taught them to say Subhan Allah, Allahu Akbar, and Alhamdulillah thirty-three times after every prayer. So they came to him and said: "O Messenger of Allah, we heard our brothers, the people of wealth, do as we do?" He said:[Al-Hadid 57:21]. If they do as the poor do and add to it in charity, good deeds, freeing slaves, and the like; this is the favor of Allah. The grateful rich person has great deeds by which Allah benefits the community.

That is the bounty of Allah which He gives to whom He wills, and Allah is the possessor of great bounty.
